I discussed this with our elementary school several years ago.
The school has detailed plans for terrorist/criminal attacks. The teachers are thoroughly prepared.
Each classroom has a door to the outside, and the school is within two miles of not only our city police, but our county police.
I don’t think our schools are prime targets.
Did you read about the Beslan attack ? There were over a hundred terrorists at the school, and they established a killing zone immediately outside the school so everyone within so many meters of the school died. A second wave of terrorists were in the crowd outside, and it was those terrorists who kept any immediate rescue attempt outside, and the kids and parents inside.
Your scenario about kids escaping thru outside doors is a fantasy in that type of attack.

That is great to hear about your local school. I am afraid that many school systems are not so well prepared. Shortly after 9/11 our local schools added more security plans to exsisting plans. My school (from which I retired) added locked gates so the only access is through the front office. Lockdown plans are practiced on a regular basis, but there is no armed security on campus. I do hope that school systems are doing everything they can to be prepared. I just pray that we never have another terrorist attact!
