Mrs. Trooprally called me this evening to tell me that she and her husband, as well as Concretebob, saw damage along almost the entire length of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. They found this damage this morning, when they walked through the area before participating in the September 11th Freedom Walk.
Concretebob was told by a National Park Service employee that the damage was done on Friday night. There was no police report taken or written about the vandalism, apparently. And the damage was still very much there today.
Here are a few of the photos that Mrs. Trooprally took this morning...
This first one is not so noticeable, but as they walked into the center, it got worse.
It looks like the person who did this walked along The Wall with some type of container, perhaps hidden at their side so that they could squirt the oily substance without being caught in the act.
The names along the lower part of The Wall appear to have taken the brunt of the damage.
Because of the reflective nature of The Wall, Mrs. Trooprally had a tough time capturing the extent of the damage. Mr. Trooprally said that the oily substance has discolored the shiny stone, but that it has been absorbed into the more porous area where the names are etched into The Wall.
I actually think it’s the opposite effect—those Americans who do NOT vote! Only a small percentage of the American population actually makes the effort to get out and vote in elections. :-(
Sometimes I wonder if the law said you have to vote, what the true results would be?
SDS HAS WANTED TO “SPRAY” the memorial since at least march. Google DC vietnam memorial vandalized OR vandals its very enlightening.
They are no better than the Taliban in that regard.
PING-bump to a possible perp jumping the gun.
The thing is they don't consider them "our fallen". The leftists were unabashedly on the side of the VC and North in the Vietnamese war. "Our fallen" for them our the many Communist soldiers who died, fighting the USA.
It is entirely predictable that they hate the Monument and wish to deface it.
It is a reminder of the rightness of the cause of those who gave the ultimate sacrafice for the freedom of those they did not even know. As a Commie you'd have to hate that.
I am almost afraid to say anything for fear that I would be banned. I’ll just say this is despicable.
Please provide an update when action by the Park Service is taken to clean/repair the damage and what action, if any, the Park Service police is taking to prevent this from happening again.
I’ve only been there once and it was a very, very moving and emotional experience. I join others in outrage over this senseless act of vandalism.
tgslTakoma just called me at work. She went down to the memorial with a video camera. She’s on her way back and she’s going to post the video on Google Video or YouTube.
She told me the oil marks run the entire length of the wall and appear to be blantant intentional defacing. She’ll have more to show and tell when she gets back. Stay tuned.
As I clarified in an earlier post, it wasn't my intention to "explain away" vandalism -- that may well be what it is. I was bothered by the assumption not that it's vandalism but that the "usual suspects" are behind it, so I presented some alternative hypotheses. The point I wanted to drive home was that we don't yet know what happened.
It hits closer to home, in the most literal sense. On the Mall, well, you're on the Mall -- there are memorials everywhere you look. The moving wall is in front of a backdrop you see every day.
Bastards!
Your statement is an oxymoron (smile). The left wing IS mentally unbalanced.
I was at the first one and just can’t make this one. I will be at all the rest.

The Park Service stood by just like the Capitol Police last year when some Lefties vandalized the Capitol steps. No one was charged. They should have held the host group responsible. Beyond disgusting! Beyond appalling!
Not very likely; actually, not likely at all, from what I saw of the damage firsthand this morning. I arrived shortly after 9:30am (street parking opens up then) and walked the entire length of The Wall, from east to west, with video camera rolling. The oily-looking dribbles began at Panel 48E and continued all the way to the west panels. I don't have the exact panel numbers that were sprayed, because I am just now watching the video. I will post more info as soon as I have gone through the video.
And I will post the video on You Tube, hopefully before nightfall.
It also appears that the same oily stuff was dribbled on the pedestal for the nurses' (at the fallen soldier's feet) statue and the walkway around it, though not as extensive as The Wall.
There are some similar oily dribbles at the cobblestone by the Brothers statue, but the statue itself appeared OK. It is surrounded by a short chain fence and sticker bushes.
I am going to work on the video right now. Back in a few hours.
Very disturbing to see this damage in person.
I wish a dc freeper could get down there and get the name badge# etc of a park service employee and get them onrecord as knowing about it and not cleaning it.
fwiw, i had a "very bad feeling" all weekend about NOT having GOE marshals AT the wall FRI AM - TUE AM. (sadly, i was evidently correct.)
my "crystal ball" sees "a BAD OUTCOME" for "the doers" WHEN (rather than IF) we find out WHO "the guilty party(s)" are.
FACT!!! ("everybody knows" that we "old vietnam-era vets" are "REALLY CRAZY" & "VIOLENCE-PRONE"!!!!)
