Rainbows End?
I haven’t been reading much lately, so I can’t comment on any of these. I have had a copy of Dozois’ “The Year’s Best Science Fiction”, 23rd edition, for a couple of months now still unopened.
If you have NEVER seen any of the Dr Who or only the old Dr and not this new one... I HIGHLY recommend this episode.
Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form: Doctor Who - “Girl in the Fireplace” (2006)
It is my all time FAVORITE DR WHO of all the shows ever. A “10”, flawless, and a well deserved award !
I’ve *never* seen Dr. Who, old or new. Is it on DVD?
The only Vinge I’ve read is “A Fire Upon The Deep” and I found it so so. Has anybody read “Rainbow’s End”?
I liked that Dr. Who epi. Usually, it’s so pc that I don’t watch more than two minutes of it.
Hubby and I just finished watching the 2-parter that finished up last night (hurray DVRs) - the one that takes place at the boys’ school just before WWI. We were trying to decide if the “killing is wrong, so just give yourself over to the bad guys” meme says anything about the mainstream UK sensibilities, or just the show’s writers (not unlike how Hollywood doesn’t speak for everyone in the States). I suspect it is the latter.
Didn't think much of her acting, and the chemistry just wasn't there, so maybe they worked it out.
It has mixed reviews, but I think I’ll get the paperback when it’s available. I’ve read most of his stuff, and it’s very good.
Unfortunately it isn’t part of the series including A Fire upon the Deep or A Deepness in the Sky, but seems to be a cyberpunk novel based on his earlier story, Fast Times at Fairmont High.
The second half of the 2 parter was the best one so far with the current Dr. The ending with the boy changing his “fate” and seeing the Dr. years dwon the road were incredible. I think this is the best espisode the current Dr. has done. Give Martha a break. Shes just new. It took me a while to really get into Rose. Keep an eye out for Torchwood which is a Dr. Who spinoff.
The girl in the frielplace was a great episode!
I really enjoyed the growth in Rose's character arc... a tart who turned out to have some substance after all.
Martha Jones... maybe she'll be a substantive character who'll prove to be a tart?? (JK) I love the show, I find it charming and wildly creative - something that can't be said for much American Scifi.
Torchwood has been on the DVR queue for a week already - can't wait for tonite! Captn Jack was a wonderful character; the segments of him in the game show with Mecha-Trinny and Mecha-Susanna was hilarious! Torchwood better live up to that.
I love the Sci-fi Channel for keeping Sci-Fi alive but I wish they would just kill of some shows. Stargate, SG Atlantis, Flash Gordon. What I don’t like about Sci-Fi channel is that they keep bringing back the same actors to different shows. Some from Farscape ended up in Stargate, some from the Old Stargate show up in the new SG Atlantis. Flash Gordon I am not too impresed by so far. The best show right now is Battlestar Galactica. Even thought they have these liberal themes sometimes trying to “fly under the radar” it is a good show. Torchwood may be good. I’m glad to see that the character is American. He was great in the two episodes I saw him show up in Dr. Who.
My fave under the radar show was Dresden. Cancelled, dontchaknow.

Wow. Just wow. I thought Jim Baen was a shoo-in for editor because... you know... he died.
they all pale in comparison to Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, H. Beam Piper or Frederic Brown. Hell! They pale...

Call me an old fashioned snob... 
but I'll be double dipped in flatcat poop before I am going to pay $8.99 for a new sci-fi paperback I'll not enjoy when I can reread the Gold Age Sci-Fi Classics from my local half-price book store for from 50 cents to $3.
BTW in the 10 cent bin I found 14 paperbacks for this coming week, one is Asimov's The Martian Way which I haven't read in probably 15 years!
