Gen. Mattis to Receive Four-Star Nomination
North County Times ^ | Friday, September 7, 2007 | MARK WALKER

NORTH COUNTY ---- Camp Pendleton's Lt. Gen. James Mattis will be nominated for the rank of general and appointed commander of a high-level military planning and strategy unit based in Virginia, the North County Times has learned.

Mattis, whose present job is commander of Marine Corps Forces Central Command and head of Camp Pendleton's I Marine Expeditionary Force, will become head of the Joint Forces Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation.

Multiple sources within the military and in Washington, D.C., confirmed that Mattis, who has overseen Marine Corps forces in the Middle East for the last 15 months and is regarded as a "warrior monk" for his intellectual acumen and war-fighting skills, will be nominated for a fourth star by President Bush.

An announcement of the nomination is expected to come from the Defense Department within days. The move is subject to Senate confirmation.

Mattis will become one of a small number of four-star generals in the Marine Corps. Efforts to reach him in Washington, where he has been in a series of meetings, were unsuccessful.

The appointment to the Joint Forces Command is expected to come as early as Nov. 1. `````````` It was not immediately clear how much longer Mattis will serve as the authority over the Haditha case and other cases involving allegedly unlawful slayings in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Not good news, it could mean someone else will make the decisions on Haditha.

I don't follow the political or inner workings of military cadre', but .. is this a good guy or a bad guy?

What I mean is ... Jack traitor Murtha aside ... the assault on our warriors for doing their jobs must be facilitated by high ranking military men.

He’s a Marine’s Marine. Taking him away from the case might ensure a conviction or at least a court martial.

Thanx ... then, could/is this be a bribe to get him to back off?

No bribe, he is being transfered out of the picture.

It’s a nomination ... not necesarilly a promotion (yet) ... he can refuse it, can’t he?

He is being nominated for the rank but is appointed to the position.

He could refuse the appointment and the nomination then resign.

It’s a brilliant political move to take him out of the picture.

That’s what I was thinking ... OK cobra ... keep us updated ... everything rises and falls on leadership ... and there sure is a push on, right now, to wrest leadership of America from the people, and the good guys of the people’s choice.

Is that automatic or does that also have to go through a nomination/confirmation process? (Interested, obviously, in who the new Convening Authority will be.)

Any Marine senior officer who has had any part in the sham prosecution of junior Marines should have their promotions frozen, at the very least. They have shown themselves to be politically correct hacks rather than warriors willing to lead men into combat. [Srew] up and move up. That still lives today I see.

“Generally” that’s how it works, but you never know what could happen. I’ve seen new commanders show up out of nowhere.
