Gee, it must be nice to have such a holier than thou attitude.

Get off your high horse. There are people who are by clinical definition obese that eat no more and some times less than your average person and certainly well within the calorie guidelines of the medical profession.

Scientists are now discovering the facts behind what many people have been telling them for years. Genes, viruses, insulin response are all recognized medical conditions that we are just now beginning to understand how they impact the human metabolism. Even the types of food can impact the metabolism and people’s body respond differently. My wife gains weight if she eats too much meat and has to follow the food pyramid very closely. I gain weight rapidly if I follow the food pyramid because it contains too many carbohydrates. My doctor tells me that my body produces too much insulin in response to carbohydrates.

Do some people over eat and/or under exercise ... sure. But do not paint with such a wide brush as to believe that everyone is the same and can be simply treated the same way.

High horse? Few people play the victim card more than the ‘obese and offended’.

It’s pretty simple for all involved, no matter what excuse they use:

If you find that you’re gaining weight by doing X, don’t do X. If you have trouble losing weight, get away from the keyboard or tv and take a walk.

I lost 10 lbs by doing nothing more than cutting out soft drinks and sweets. I’ve lost another 5 lbs just in a month by getting rid of cheese. Not a problem. I don’t get to eat everything I like, but I make decisions and I live with the consequences.

But hell, if you can blame genetics or something else, it makes life so much easier.

Bravo! I know people that have to exercise everyday and eat under 1000 calories a day just to maintain a “normal” weight...and I know people that eat 2000 calories a day, never exercise, and yet are thin.

In regards to gaining weight, and body metabolism...we are not all created equal.

Talk about a high horse.

Yes, a few people have medical issues that caused them to end up obese, but most obese people simply eat way more than they need with the extra turning to fat and obesity over time. Wake Up - you are not helping by going into denial.

You are so right, but gross generalization is always the instrument of choice for people who practice self agrandizement.

In the words of Dana Carvey, “Aren’t we special.” They make tooting their own horn into an art form.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! The issue of why some people have difficulty maintaining a healthy weight is not always how much is on the fork and how often. Sadly, your words of wisdom will be lost on many people, including posters here in FreeRepublic. It is probably easier to criticize, verbally harass, and make disgusting jokes about people who have weight issues than it is to truly understand the reasons why the one size fits all approach to weight management is not working for everybody.

You are right; you win a big Mac. Since you’re defending fat people, you must be a tub of lard.

People who have a medical problem causing them to be fat probably account for <1% of the obese people in the world. Gluttenous appetites and laziness account for the rest.
