The very idea of a carbon tax is ludicrous, but there is no such thing as an offsetting tax cut.

Taxes never die. It is not allowed.

The only thing allowed is more taxes.

Speak for yourself, Schultz.

I think this diningushed mutt is part of Kellog/Brown/Root in California.

I consider him part of what’s wrong with America.

Those who advocate taxes, especially dedicated taxes need to be watched warily. Although a tax might be said to be for a specific purpose, in reality it all ends up in the same pot.

Is this the only solution that they can ever come up with to any given problem? "Tax it and it will fix everything"...

I have yet to figure out how taxing "carbon use" will make it go away. And, by his stellar logic, if this new tax were offset by a corresponding tax reduction (yeah, and monkeys will fly out of my butt), then would we not have the funds to just pay the taxes anyway and keep on consuming? These people are truly dilluted.

One more way for the progressive libs to screw the taxpayer for more money extracted at the point of a gun. This whole notion is just another way to force the little people in compliance so the Al Gore’s and Hollywood sickos can maintain their ridiculously extragant waste of energy-rich resources.

You do know of course that the "carbon Tax" goes by another name? Look up. "Tobin Tax" and Shultz knows this.

Wanna guess which organization would collect those taxes.

Read what the un has in store for the world when it comes to taxing. And shultz agrees.

Repeal the 16th Amendment and replace it with a tax on oil and I’m with him.

George Schultz must be smoking! The Left will NEVER cut taxes elsewhere. We already have far too much of a tax burden. Now a carbon tax? HELL, NO!

The greenhouse gas problem is more broadly recognized today than it was during the Kyoto Protocol negotiations. Moreover, the protocol is running its course, so a new treaty is needed.

The greenhouse gas "PROBLEM" is more recognized as a ruse to implement socialism. The only problem I see is that the ones who should be opposing the socialism, treaties, and taxes being pushed as "remedies" are now saying things like Shultzie here.

I hate RINOs. I want real men to stand up and say NO to this nonsense.

Strong growth means increased use of energy at a pace that can strain the capacity to supply what is needed at a reasonable price. This highlights two urgent questions: how to use energy without producing excess greenhouse gases that create disruptive conditions on a global scale; and how to reduce the threat to national security from excess dependence on oil.

I always liked George Shultz, Secretary of State under Reagan I believe, and also a one time executive of Bechtel, and certainly an intelligent man, although as stated above, getting up in years.

So:

1)Agreed, economic growth IS energy, almost by definition, and the second law of thermodynamics, that is the flow of higher grade energy to lower grade to produce negentropic artefact (material goods).

2)Not agreed at all about anthropogenic "greenhouse gases" producing "disruptive" climate change. For many technical reasons, a couple of which are that; water vapor across the globe is about 18000 ppm, CO2 about 320; as a planet warms its atmosphere will increase percentage in the heavier gases (CO2)as the lighter ones (O2, N2) reach escape velocity (boil off); and I seriously doubt the global climate models (GCM) come any where close to accurately incorporating deep ocean sediments, planktonic variation, oceanic gas exchange, top soil turnover, etc. This faultiness is exactly because the GCM's are modelled by "climate scientists" obsessed with the atmosphere - it's a whole lot more complicated.

3)On the other hand, agreed totally about reducing importation of oil for national security, but there are many other inhouse fossil fuels.

4)Like the man says, there's not a chance in hell of "offsetting" other taxes. With all due respect you're in dreamland on that one George.

Hence if'n I can become one of them thar "distinguished" fellows at that vacuum cleaner or FBI institution, I'd love to discuss this more with you George.
