NEW YORK -- Whoopi Goldberg started her stint on ABC's "The View" Tuesday by coming to the defense of convicted felon Michael Vick.
Just 15 minutes into the show she brought up Vick's conviction on dogfighting charges.
"You know from his background this is not an unusual thing for where he comes from," said Goldberg.
"There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of our country."
Co-host Joy Behar seemed shocked at Goldberg's statements.
"How about dog torture and dog murdering," Behar asked.

These people don’t think about anybody but themselves. Other people are lower than life, so what does a dog matter?
If you view the view you’re getting what you hoped for, people with views lower than dogs...
Is that true?
It was a joke he told on his horrible Minstral Night performance.
Whoopie sez,"It's a black thang, you crackers wouldn't understand."
She needs an ego enema.
Not really. You simply can’t seem to comprehend that different people find different things funny. You can play your tapes of the racist b!tch and roll on the floor laughing. I’ d most likely look at them and get up and leave. I looked at the DVD of Ghost about a year ago and wondered why I ever bought it.
I doubt you even remember the HBO show I’m referencing. No problem.
I think that this whole thing is just blown way out of proportion. First of all, these are just dogs. When did we start putting the value of dogs over human life? He was wrong for his actions, I’m not defending them, but he doesn’t deserve prison time. If this were to happen to a human being then I would certainly understand everyones hatred for him but, lets just be real, “THESE ARE JUST DOGS”.
Whoopi has a point. You may not understand it, but bottom line, it’s a reality. It happens, it’s accepted, and Vick was wrong but he was wrong for being a product of his environment, just like anyone else who grows up with hatred or unacceptable behavior in our society. He doesn’t need persecution, just understanding, as do all of us.
I suspect she meant “indigenous”.
[my conjecture is, of course, contingent on whether or not she actually knows that the word exists]
It’s good to see that The View found somebody “less controversial” than Rosie O’Donut.
I rented Jumpin' Jack Flash and couldn't get through half of it. I like Star Trek: The Next Generation, but Whoopi was nothing but lame on that show. She sounded like an idiot when talking about "her people", but it was fun to try to guess the shape of hat she'd be wearing (yield sign, stop sign, railroad crossing, etc).
Normally I don’t like to say “just dogs.” but these things were pitbulls. They are not good for anything except dog fights. That said, I would like to be around people who engage in this business.
Actually he said, and I am paraphrasing, that it was like loving a warm room.
