Romney jokes about Thompson delays
Yahoo News ^ | 9/3/07 | PHILIP ELLIOTT

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Monday said he would welcome Republican rival Fred Thompson to the race, but also took some jabs at Thompson's long delay in formally announcing his candidacy.

Thompson, the "Law & Order" television actor and former senator from Tennessee, is expected to officially enter the race this week. Instead of attending a Wednesday night debate in Durham, N.H., Thompson will be in Los Angeles to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

"I think it will boost the ratings for Jay Leno's show, but I'd rather be doing well in New Hampshire," said Romney, who is leading in most polls in this early voting state.

Thompson's candidacy has been a shadow on the GOP contest. He has equivocated about getting into the race, while his campaign organization has been in flux. His entry comes remarkably late in a campaign cycle that began days after the 2006 midterm elections.

"Well, I guess the only comment I'd make to Fred Thompson would be: Why the hurry? Why not take a little longer to think this over?" Romney jokingly told reporters. "From my standpoint, if he wants to wait until January or February, that would be ideal."

That's when the primaries unfold in rapid succession.

Romney spent Monday opening his fall campaign, marching in a Labor Day parade in Milford and attending retails stops elsewhere. He said voters would note who is there — and who is not.

"I think people will notice there have been a bunch of guys who have been working real hard to get to know voters across the country," Romney said.

As for Thompson's entry, Romney quipped: "I think he'll have some fun. We're going to presumably have some debates with him. We'll have had five without him."

LMBO Fred`s a real conservative and Mitt is not!

Don't worry your head about Fred, he'll do just fine.

Romney got himself both a law degree and MBA at the same time, while raising a young family; he started his own venture capital firm, made half a billion leading it through a number of successful investments; was asked to become CEO of Bain and Co., and turned that company around in a year; he also who went in and saved the SLC Olympics from scandal; that, plus he has executive experience as Governor ...

Nice encapsulation.

Witty jabs from Romney is pretty much the way he should handle questions about it. When Fred gets in we will have the opportunity to see how much he damaged his support by post poning his entry.

It’s unsettling to watch so “perfect specimen” as Willard the Weatherboy become so contorted with distress.

Just curious, what are your juvenile nicknames for the other candidates? I expect at least 8.

How about ‘anytime later’?

And how would you know? He won a straw poll in Texas, he's going on that "Fight for Victory" tour in Nevada, once more people see him and get to know about him he could surge in the polls for all we know.

The only reason he's doing so poorly is because he's a Rep. Voters like Senators, governors, or former VPs. If Hunter were a Senator instead I guarantee you he would lead Fred in some of these polls.

We just had seven years of a successful businessman running the country. We don’t need another Blueblood with an MBA in the WH.

Fred`s conservatism and his belief in the Founders idea of federalism is what the country and the nation needs right now. Not some centrist-moderate from Mass., who changes his politics as often as he changes his socks.

Thompson missed the Republican debate in Manchester NH on June 5th too but he won it even though he waws not there. Thompson was interviewed on FOX the same night of the debate and scored more points than any of the Republicans. Thompson is the man to beat.

Unless Thompson is found in bed with a member of his staff of the same gender, caught driving under the influence, or is taped taking money from Red China, or holding a fund raiser in a Bud dist Temple he will probably be the next president.

Romney is a RINO...of course, he might just get along fine with the RINO’s in the House & Senate.

Go tell your mama on me.

Wow, this might be an original thought, rather than a cliche, as it didn't show up on the cliche finder. The closest I could come is.

Cliché:  Save the drama for your mama

I’ve written over one thousand posts on that buffoon from MA attacking his lack of substance and the political ruins that he leaves in his wake, go look them up. I make no apologies for “one liners”, as he’s been debunked as a phony and a destructive RINO fraud with an ego to equal a Kennedy’s a long time ago. He knows that once Fred is in, his little dog and pony show is caput. And none too soon. So like I said, the hairball can continue to laugh it up.

Political whore is definitely an apt description where Precious is concerned. Doing the dirty work for the liberals and the rodentry.

I would like the legions of Fred Thompson supporters here to explain just what makes this man qualified to be President? What executive experience does he have? What leadership experience does he have? What exactly has the man done to earn my vote other than play a straight talking, no nonsense authority figure on television and in the movies?

I ask this in all seriousness because my primary vote is still up for grabs and I will not cast my vote for someone based on a few nice sounding soundbites from a speech.

"Fred is a myth. Romney is real."

He's real, alright. Real liberal, real phony, and real destructive. Fred, unlike the fraud from Ratsachusetts, actually was called to run by the people, and not by his ginormous ego.

Reckon that would be a good topic for a thread? Maybe we could all kick in a few names and see how they go?

Willard ‘the Weatherboy’
Paul ‘the warrior’
Rudy ‘the dancer’
‘Corn pone’ Freddy
Duncan ‘the fence’
Johnny ‘the ace’ McCain
‘Guitar man’ Huckabee
“Rio Grande’ Tom
Brownback ‘who’

I hear “Fred” was the #1 answer on a recent episode of “Family Feud”. He was up there with “Jet Blue” and “passing stones”. Maybe Mitt will hire me as one of his writers?

In case no one got the joke, it was "Name something you wait a long time for".
