Congressman Bullies Constituents in Colorado Springs
Denver Post ^ | Sept 2, 2007 | Erin Emery

Posted on 09/02/2007 9:37:47 AM PDT by jebanks

Colorado Springs - Rep. Doug Lamborn left two voice mails at the home of a couple who questioned his acceptance of campaign contributions from the gambling industry, saying there would be "consequences" if the couple did not respond.

Jonathan and Anna Bartha wrote a letter printed in the Aug. 24 Woodmen Edition, a community newspaper.

The couple raised concerns about Lamborn's receipt of $1,000 from International Game Technology PAC and a $500 contribution last summer from Marc Murphy, an executive of Bronco Billy's Casino in Cripple Creek. IGT makes gambling equipment.

Jonathan Bartha, 34, is employed by Focus on the Family. His wife, a board member of Falcon School District 49, worked for two months as a scheduler for candidate Jeff Crank during a bitter, six-way Republican primary race for the 5th Congressional District seat.

In his messages, Lamborn said he wanted to appeal to the couple as "brothers and sisters in Christ" and implored them to call him back to discuss their "blatantly false" letter.

"We felt very threatened and intimidated, and quite frankly, scared," Anna Bartha said. "It was just not anything we would ever anticipate an elected official would pursue or a way that an elected official would conduct himself."

When asked whether his messages were threatening, Lamborn said: "No, that is ridiculous. My hope, I failed, but I had hoped to meet with them privately and confidentially because lying is a serious matter. "

When asked what he meant when he said there would be "consequences," Lamborn said: "When someone tells a lie, it just has bad consequences."

Doug Lamborn is my Congresscritter. Southwestern Colorado is GOP country. El Paso is the most Republican county in the nation.

I hope this can be resolved. If it can't, if the Congressman felt defamed, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lawsuit in the works.

I’m not sure the Congressman has a case to gripe about. It looks like he did accept the gambling contributions.

Well, seems to me there might be some mixed motives here, and I also suspect Lamborn failed to suck up to Focus on the Family adequately and abjectly enough, or at some point after his election his sucking up dropped below acceptable levels. I am no defender of Lamborn, and actually thought Jeff Crank was the better candidate, but there is something stinky in this situation, and I suspect the stink goes both ways.

Doug Lamborn is my Congressman and he’s got a solid conservative voting record, both as a Colorado State Senator and a House member. This appears to be a continuation of sour grapes from the hotly contested political campaign from last November. Jeff Crank is thinking about making another run and wants to undercut Cong Lamborn anyway he can.

With over a year to go till the election, the mudslinging has already started. I’m sure all of this will get resolved before long. Just not to everyones satisfaction.

Congressman Bullies Constituents in Colorado Springs
headline in the Denver Post

There seems to be a clear failure to communicate.

The Denver Post headline is provocative and only reflects
self rightous politically motivated individuals.

Doug is my Congressman as well.

There seems to be no leadership in the El Paso County Republican Party
in healing the open wounds in the 5th CD following the contentious primary.

The former congressman ( Joel M. Hefley ) refused to close ranks behind the winner
of last years primary. This is a violation of Ronald Reagan
famous 11th commandment to speak no ill of fellow republicans.
As well as someone who doesn't play well with others and
does not believe in the American experiment in self-government.

This failure to operate a political party with some discipline
provides fodder for the socialist rag, the Denver Post to exploit.

If Jonathan and Anna Bartha were reasonable and rational
citizens, they would have approached the Congressman's office
or the party chairman's office
about their concerns first before they embarrassed themselves
and the Republican Party
by making false and unsubstantiated statements in public.

The members of the 5th CD Republicans should shun and
dis-fellowship irrational and self-centered people like the Barthas

I can’t believe this is still goint on (i’ll give you the skinny-at least as much as I know since I was in CO Sprngs for the Primary Campaign last Summer). Jeff Crank was a LOOSING candidate (that went negative against Lamborn early in the Primary-as he very much wanted to WIN, and had been preparing to succeed Congressman Joel Heffley for years-he worked on his staff, and was the “hand-picked succcessor”. I think Lamborn was the most conservative, IMO. He was in the CO-State Legislature with a solid Conservative record for 12years. Joel lost, and apparently these two are bitter (despite working for FoF). Notice how they used to work on Joel Heffley’s campaign (and how Congressman Lamborn wanted to discuss this as “brothers and sisters in Christ”!

Sheesh was did they want..He’s was being friendly. Lamborn is one of the good ones in Congress, IMO. It’s best to stay out of these inner-republican personality disputes.

Have to stick to the facts...
- When did he return the IGT donation
- Did he ever return the other one
- If he did either of the above, why was the mandatory reporting not done.

Right or not, he left himself wide open for this.

My recommendation to Doug Lamborn would be to keep better books
and donate publicly any questionable donations for documentation purposes.

Also treat so-called Christians from "Focus on the Family" at arms length.
