Note that this was a Tropical Wave that was being forecast as a possible Tropical Depression at 5 am on Friday. It may go from Tropical Wave to Cat 5 within 72 hours...

One more problem with this storm -- it is now moving away from the land mass of South America, which means that there will be more warm water to make the storm larger (not necessarily stronger).

In other words, it is moving in an area where winds can extend even further out...

Need some unfavorable upper level winds....

I was just wondering if severe weather would occur in the area between the two storms.

One thing that is different from H. Dean is the direction after entering the Gulf of Mexico.

TS Henriette, though in the Pacific is projected to go through Nogales, Arizona -- which is North and West of the Projected path of Felix.

This, in terms of steering currents, may push H. Felix more to the North East once it enters the Gulf of Mexico -- meaning evacuations by oil companies, and perhaps areas of Texas and Louisiana might be in the path -- if TS Henriette acts as a force to push H. Felix North Eastward.

Point being, it is of interest to follow TS Henriette in terms of the 5 day forecast in terms of steering winds for H. Felix.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, which I hope is the case.

H. Felix turning Northeast once it enters the Gulf of Mexico is a bad scenario...

Yep. They do that stuff all the time though, so they’re used to it. They do 10 to 12 hour flights in all quads of those storms, into and out of the eyewall, anywheres from FL015 to FL100. When those birds puncture the eyewall, they typically freefall about 2000’ due to difference in pressure and lift (much lower density altitude). During this time there’s no change in the altimeter reading, except for radar AGL. It’s definetly more exciting than any E-ticket ride that’s for sure.

Interesting that they aborted the flight though. NOAA’s hurricane hunters fly P-3 and G-14’s. Those P-3’s should be able to take pretty much whatever gets dished out, but them G-14’s may not be so tolerant. The G-IV’s are used typically only for high altitude weather observation though.

The AFR 53rd Wx Recon Squadron flies those Lockheed-Martin WC-130J’s. I couldn’t imagine what would cause them to abort on account of weather conditions.

I kinda wish they wouldn’t run again at 11pm. I mean, Felix has already impressed us off the charts and off the wall, we can wait til daylight for another run.

Getting hammered by ice and turbulence isn’t fun. I usually don’t see the NOAA guys in stronger hurricanes, so that’s probably a factor.
