Attorney General Gonzales Resigns Controversy Plagued Top Law Enforcement Official By PIERRE THOMAS, JASON RYAN, THERESA COOK and JACK DATE Aug. 27, 2007

Gonzales will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. at the Justice Department to announce the resignation; President Bush is also expected to make a statement at 11:30 a.m.

*snip* The embattled attorney general had withstood months of criticism from both sides of the aisle in Congress for a variety of missteps. Lawmakers blasted Gonzales after his department fired at least nine U.S. attorneys last year and accused him of misusing terrorist surveillance programs. Most recently Democrats charged that Gonzales had repeatedly lied to Congress under oath.

Throughout Gonzales' sometimes rocky tenure, President Bush had defended him in recent months, accusing his detractors of playing politics. The New York Times reported Friday that Gonzales submitted his resignation to the president by phone Friday morning.

Bush has yet to announce a replacement for the attorney general position, but the Associated Press reports a likely temporary replacement for Gonzales is Solicitor General Paul Clement, according to a senior department official.

There are also reports that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will be named as a successor to Gonzales.

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards reacted to the news of Gonzales' resignation with a statement that read: "Better late than never."

Fired U.S. Attorneys Tension between Gonzales and Congress ratcheted up this spring after details began emerging about last year's federal prosecutor firings. Gonzales' chief of staff and the department's White House liaison, who later admitted to having little prosecutorial experience themselves, were heavily involved in constructing the list of prosecutors to dismiss.

“Yup, more political party payback...just make sure he/she is brown friendly. How about a nominee that will uphold the law.”

Olson is not a friend Bush. He is just a very honest and upright man who has been a good Republican. That doesn’t mean he is a hack. He never has been, and he was very instrumental in the choices of Alito and Roberts. Don’t knock him.

They are saying “Chertoff likely replacement”! Are they stoned? Don’t they realize it will be Harriet Miers Part II? Chertoff should have been canned along with Big Gay Alberto—not PROMOTED! IF Bush recess appoints Chertoff, the House and Senate GOP should deny him anything else until he’s out of office.

I believe Fredo is going fishing, ie sleeping with the fishes. That's his fishmeister behind him, a loyal trusted goon.

Here’s my question, would Bush have given him the job if he wasn’t Hispanic?

Forgive me for repeating myself. I wrote this on another thread but it needs repeating:

We need to keep our eye on the ball as this circus escalates. Bush might try to give our country away while we are being distracted with all these clowns and trained animals running around.

A recess appointment with a big prime time speech as to why it was necessary....”I will not let this fine man’s character be smeared by baseless attacks of a personal nature, nor will I endanger our country by leaving this important position vacant, as would those who seek their own power above the good of the nation.”

...Barbara Olson was killed on one of the planes flying into the twin towers on 9/11...

Strictly speaking, she went into the Pentagon.

You’re right. Got my airplanes mixed up. She was on the one that went into the Pentagon. I stand (or sit) corrected.

There was a DEA mucky-muck interviewed by John Stossel, and he talked about an eventual ban on tobacco (which, of course, would then fall under the DEA’s purview). Made me sick, given the Constitutional indigestion given by Prohibition, and the present disaster known as the War On Drugs.

I’ve grown to hate Free Republic. I used to love it so. The conservatives who post here would rather be righteously indignant and utterly irrelevant than to get off of their high horses.

So you didn’t like the guy. OK. But for you then to say that you don’t care about the way he was treated is to give a green light to the libs to abuse him without ramifications. This is not good for your cause.

See y’all. I’ve had it. What you folks should realize is that you have lost a lot of your readership to better places. Why go read rant after rant after rant from the nutcases on your site when there is Lucianne, Powerline, HH, Realclearpolitics, and dozens of others.

I think a lot of people have left here and gone elsewhere, because the only folks who are welcome here are the real angry, angry fringe.

No fan of Alberto Gonzales "BUT" this resignation just proves the POWER of the Democrat Party and the MSM.

Jane Reno's tenure was much worse and no matter how many accusations of wrongdoing presented by the GOP, none of them stuck!!

Bolton would be a great choice . . . for America but not for those who want to see us become just another third-world nation. He’d never get approval from the Democrat-controlled Senate.
