The left has always relied upon propaganda to seduce/deceive its followers. Actually the method of operation has become quite centrist or as many claim mainstream these days. Some of the 'big' tent republicans will accept whatever is offered upon the big pie plate so long as their own social programs are funded.
Communism was always about social programs. Social programs is dependency on the government. Communism is state-ownership.
