Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.
Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.
The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

I hate to see this storm hit anywhere but God forgive me I am glad it is steering clear of my home town area of the Mississippi coast!!

Well, it is moving over VERY warm waters (84 degrees or so), so I’m glad it’s a fast-mover.
With all my focus on the Gulf/Caribbean and Hurr Dean, I was totally unaware of the death toll of 13 from the remnants of TS Erin.
I’d seen the Kingfisher helo rescue over and over, but had no idea there were so many deaths in Oklahoma. I do want to spend a little time on that to see where-all the flooding was - OK’s my other home.

AF300 seems to have suffered a breakdown. It’s ending its mission early, so we’ll have nothing but estimates until the afternoon.
Where’d everybody go? Ummm, the GMA met Sam Champion reported from Cancun. He indicated he thought landfall would be near Chetumal.
At least, I *think* that’s where he meant. He said “Chee-toe-mowl.” I’m sure he meant “Shay-too-mall.”
I think that’s slightly south of where LF *might* be - because I’m rooting for Monkeyville - a fictitious spot of my own imaginings somewhere between Chetumal on the south and Tulum on the north (both sacred spots) which leads right into the unpopulated monkey jungle that pretty much covers the interior of the Yucatan.
He also said that the 75,000 tourists who are to be evac’ed from Cancun (some of those came over by ferry from Cozumel, too) today are *flying* out. Ummm, that’s not the way *I* heard it. Many were interviewed by our local reporters from HouTX on the ground there in QRoo and said they were being taken by bus to Merida.
Dean’s gonna be knock-knock-kickin’ in the door there tonight!
Also, the hurricane warning/watch goes all the way around the coast from the southern tip of Belize to Cancun/Cozumel to Isla Mujeres to Merida to Ciudad del Carmen, according to the shaded area they showed in a graphic.
Prayers continue for all in the path, except where the choice is monkeys or people - then people take precedence.
Things will be slow until the afternoon. Other than a brush by the Caymans, there’s nothing going on, and the morning Hunter run appears to have been cut short.

I saw that last night. At least the other one, in line with the ULL and Dean, is pretty much gone.
Very interesting. Rough plot puts that item of interest about 1250 miles ESE of the Florida Strait, and at that forward speed, it’s a bit over 2 days out.
Whaaattt? I was just about to fall asleep for the day (this is my “nighttime”) and I thought I heard our local TV met say that Cancun and Cozumel are OUT of the cone and that Belize City is now the ground zero of projected landfall??
I have to sleep, but hope y’all will post more about this so I can see it when I wake up. That is an area of special interest to me. I can’t believe it! BBML

We just got back Saturday from Belize, guess I got out in time, but most of my family is in Belize and some are in Belize City.
Belize City is below sea level, a direct hit would cause a heck of a lot of damage.
