Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

Try lowering your security settings via control panel.

The Islands do that a lot, but you’re right, it is a good idea. They also have the “leg power” to send people out to every home with flyers to tell them when it will happen and what to do.

*and there’s always the coconut telegraph, which knows about it before the power company does, lol*

They probably also don't have a lot of people threatening to sue them because they couldn't see American Idol or somesuch.

I also heard that they have gas trucks ready to go to certain areas so that people don’t run out of gas like they did with Rita.

Models tightening up more N.

They came around to the gulf low which is finally moving W. Somebody had to manually input the reality of the low, rather than let the model run on its prior assumptions.

I’m feeling a little better about Ambergris Caye (Belize) now, with this stormcarib report:

http://www.stormcarib.com/reports/current/belize.shtml

However, it does make it sound like they’re preparing for Dean to possibly come in a bit farther south than I was picturing.

Yeah, they’ve been in position for a couple of days.

Have y’all made a decision yet what you’re going to do? Did you see my msg that a bunch of special needs people have been voluntarily evac’ed out of your area already?

Is there any govt person y’all can call, or an OEM manager maybe?

Well, those buses are there for you - and some have stretchers and medical equipt onboard just for people like y’all have to move. They could be there by late morning if they left SA now, but I bet there are some in the RGV right now.

That’s my feeling, too. I don’t *think* you’ll need to do it - and I truly hope you don’t have to, speaking as someone with special needs myself. Ugh. Bless your hearts!

It does look like the models have come up a tad doesn’t it? I still think it will go into Mexico, but how close to us is the question.
