Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.
Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.
The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

Now, I haven’t read all the thread, but was there any comment about the 17 fisherman trapped on an island that the eye may traverse? Prayers for them.
This morning I woke up in a curfew
Oh god, I was a prisoner too - yeah
Could not recognise the faces standing over me
They were all dressed in uniforms of brutality
How many rivers do we have to cross
Before we can talk to the boss
All that we got seems lost
We must have really paid the cost
(That’s why we gonna be)
Burnin’ and a-lootin’ tonight
(Say we gonna burn and loot)
Burnin’ and a-lootin’ tonight
(One more thing)
Burnin all pollution tonight
(Oh yeah, yeah)
Burning all illusions tonight
hhmmmm..well, maybe my gut around Corpus Christi was wrong.
I’d take being wrong ;-)
I remember stories, now real vague, about the ship. Don't know if it ever produced much.

“Yep, you guessed it! DEAN came to visit me at home about 2 hours ago and he hasn’t stopped reworking the roofs, awnings, trees (at least what’s left of them) and the likes. Lights out ... Sending from mobile blackberry. Water also gone but Both telecoms giants still up and going strong.
Updates as I have it ...
St. Thomas - high waves, consistent strong winds. Impassable main roads.
Kingston - much breeze, minimal rain, some of my neighbors are now without awnings and satellite dishes ... Don’t ask why they weren’t down ... Everyone else took theirs down two nights ago! Reports of 12ft waves on the waterfront ... No proof but not impossible ... And I certainly don’t expect them less than 9ft anyway! Some roofs are lifting but none gone as yet ...
Manchester/St. Elizabeth - Sporadic gusts, average rainfall, 10ft waves in Treasure Beach area. No consistent presence of DEAN as yet for the inland areas though.
Ocho Rios - Winds are up, waves are high, minimal rainfall at this time, a few trees down ... Sue you are probably in a better position for this area ...
Montego Bay/Negril - waves growing, average winds, not yet scary but gusty! Not many persons on the road ... (this is good). Projections for the western end of the island are not good!
More later!

Has summer vacation ended in Texas yet?
Katrina was not a hallmark of our domestic severe weather preparedness.
No. Kids start in our district on the 27th.
Good to see ya stranger:) We always catch up during hurricane season, eh?
Since I’m not even close to being a meteorologist- I go by my gut! We’ll see...
Oklahoma getting tornado warnings now..amazing rescues in Kingfisher OK today..
When I visited they had an attitude, not unlike New Orleans, that somehow by magic they would never take a direct hit from a hurricane. Now, I don’t wish ill on the Jamaican people, but pardon me if I have a certain lack of confidence in their ability to work together.
She seems like a pleasant person.
Lighten up, they are going through a lot down there.
Did you read her speech?
I think it’s called voodoo
There's some serious flooding in southeast Minnesota/southwest Wisconsin as well, but no amazing rescues. 6 dead in Minnesota from floods.
nationwidenewsnetwork.com is still on the air, and handling a call-in show quite efficiently, despite the fact that they lost a piece of the studio roof. Quite a variety of comments, ranging from officials, to some woman complaining that her old man was sleeping off the prior night’s ‘festivities’ while she was left to deal with the hurricane. They’re still about an hour and a half out from the high point of the storm, but hanging together reasonably well at the moment.
That should make it easier to use the schools for evacuation centers if need be. Prayers for everyone in Dean’s path.
they keep replaying that footage of the Ok rescues on Fox, so all can tune in and catch it. That is one talented helo pilot. Amazing stuff!
“The Keys” which I’d asked about earlier...I located the island where the fishermen were “stuck” and it’s called Pedro Cay. It’s located 50 miles south of Jamaica. They’ve got to be hurting right about now.
