Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

Kingston seems to be right at the back of a nice bay which will “catch” a lot of the tidal surge. Perfect conditions for flooding from that NW quadrant.

Why is this thread not in Breaking News yet we still have the "Hastert Leaving Congress" crap still there??

Same deal with the Utah coal mine thread(s). Much more "breaking" than a congresscritter leaving the public teat yet you won't find them in Breaking or Front Page.

Welcome, got tired of trying to figure knots!

I hear ya. Now I can reference your post when they start talking about knots.

Imagine the force of the wind while sticking your hand out of the car window while going 150 mph....

I can imagine, wow.

Just got a note from brother and he asked if I was boarded up. He was starting to, but has to because he's further south, by two blocks. LOL

I think it's too early for us.

We have friends who live in Cuernavaca and they said they were anxious to leave before the storm hits Texas. I told them I think I would rather stay in Houston because if it goes into Tampico the rain in the mountains is going to be awful, mudslides come to mind.

It’s too early IMO. My husband is in healthcare. He’s taking care of home this weekend caz come tomorrow I probably won’t be seeing much of him for awhile.

I don’t understand what happened to the breaking news bar. Years back, I could check it for new stories. Now the stories don’t change for days.

Im looking at Ivan in 2004, it took nearly the same track just south of Jamaica. A Cat 4 but became a 5 just after passing.

The mudslides can do drastic damage. I’m with you, I’ll stick to the flat country!
