Hurricane Dean Live Thread [Now Cat 4]
NOAA/NWS ^ | August 16 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/16/2007 4:43:17 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane warnings have been issued for Dominica and St. Lucia as Hurricane Dean races westward into the Caribbean Sea at 24mph. This motion should bring the center of Dean near the Lesser Antilles on Friday. The increased forward speed of the storm has lessened preparation time for Caribbean Islands in its path. Hurricane Dean has favorable conditions to develop into a major hurricane over the next several days.

Between that and the latest wobble back to a more-westerly track, that’s why the NHC doesn’t use “instantaneous” motion in the advisories.

Here’s a message from someone in Playa del Carmen, regarding that topic - look at the 2nd message from the top:

http://www.stormcarib.com/reports/current/mexico.shtml

” ... What is encouraging for us here, is that our Governor, Lic. Felix Arturo Gonzalez Canto was in office for a few short months when Wilma hit. His leadership and the governments actions in the aftermath have been recognized by the United Nations as a model for disaster relief. Here in Playa Del Carmen we had power after 3 days while friends in Florida were without for 3 weeks, and we experienced Wilma as a cat 4(36 hrs) and they as a cat 2 (8 hrs). ...”

Pantload statement, apples and oranges.

That’s how I feel every day, living off of my (very meager) oil & gas royalties. The whole world is praying against my having better groceries, let alone any goodies!

..we decided to get a motorhome

I've been talking about doing the same for a couple of years. I figure we can get a good deal on one these days with the price of gasoline, and their lousy mileage.

He’s got 2 out of 3, and depending on perspective, all 3. A Cat 4/5 hasn’t hit Jamaica head-on lately, so it’ll be historic.

- Pressure up 3 mb to 929 mb

I'm not real surprised. Dean looked a bit less symmetrical this morning. I'm going to guess it was because of two possible things. Perhaps it is some kind of re-organization going on, like an eyewall replacement, or because Dean is gaining on that upper level low near florida, and the stalled remnants of Erin, which are creating a slight weakness in the ridge, which Dean is feeling and is being influenced slightly.

I’m keeping my eye on this one too. I’ve made my preliminary plans, just waiting to see how things pan out. At least the dingbat is on the ball early this time if we get hit. /rollseyes

42059 is still alive and well. At 8:50 CDT, the wind was out of the south at 39 knots gusting to 49 knots, and the pressure was coming up nicely.

“One block off the beach at Gulf Shores”? Oh, you mean Bay Minette? LOL, just kidding - only cuz I have family down there, too - wouldn’t tease about it, otherwise.
