Pipe Bombs Found In Car During Boynton Traffic Stop
PalmBeachPost.com ^ | 8/15/07 | Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

BOYNTON BEACH — What started as a traffic stop on a gold Nissan Sentra early this morning led to the discovery of two pipe bombs, masks and gloves and 15-feet of PVC pipe inside the car.

Boynton Beach police have detained the four men who were inside the car when Officer Vincent Haugh stopped it in on North Federal Highway around 2:24 a.m.

(snip)... Police are not releasing their names.

Haugh stopped the car after he saw one of the men throw something out a window. When he approached the vehicle and asked for identification, none of the occupants had any to provide.

The men were asked to step out of the car.

As they did, Haugh noticed what looked like two pipe bombs on the floorboard.

The devices were about the size of a fist. Each was wrapped in duct tape and had a fuse.

Police also found masks and gloves.

In the trunk of the car they discovered about 15-feet of PVC pipe.

(snip... much mayhem follows...)

One of the suspects told investigators they had been making pipe bombs, police said. Their motive was not known.

PVC pipe bombs? Pretty weak.

Wrong, but I won't post the details on an open forum.

I agree.

Much intelligence information regarding World War II didn't become public knowledge until the 1970s.

One incident I recall was a case of Rommel needing fuel supplies for his tanks. Several sea-going tankers were dispatched to deliver the fuel.

But all during the war, Great Britain was deciphering German encrypted messages.

For at least one of the tanker ships, it was necessary to create a plausible explanation for why the tanker was not going to arrive in North Africa. British intelligence decided to send a surveillance airplane over the tanker to create the appearance that the ship was just spotted by accident. After allowing sufficient time for the ship to report having been spotted, the ship was sunk.

In this case, there may be confederates of the people arrested who may not yet realize that our eyes are upon them. It is more valuable to leave them alone at this time than apprehend them.

The 15 feet of pipe is what amazes me! ;)

If none have IDs then the police aren’t going to release a possibly false id or stolen id that will cause someone who is innocent big problems. When they positively id them then they can release the names without harm to someone not involved. What if one of them gave the police your name? Or worse yet your name and address.

Any US bases nearby?

Location of incident is about 90 road miles north of Homestead AFB, home of Central Command, which is the command running the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's also about 145 miles south of Patrick AFB/Kennedy Space Center.

Indeed. Made a few of those myself when I was younger.

Of course, a ROPer with them is probably not up to anything good.

Ever made a spud launcher outta schedule 80?

Funny. We were discussing PVC pipe bombs and the joys of spud guns just yesterday in my office. It's amazing what you can accomplish with a little plastic, Aquanet, and one of those electric lighters. Put a 5' bolt  inside a potato, and you have something that will go through a car door, no problem.

Sorry Dog, I just saw your post....(I was napping)

Boynton Beach is exactly what others have said...
..It's not a town that would call attention to itself..
...a sleepy beach town where 'middle eastern' types could be invisible, it attracts some tourists...retirees...

Another poster had a unique 'take' on this...

Terrorists using our evacuation routes to plan attacks.

Never thought of that one...

..and with hurricane season here....hmmm.

Hey starwise, LG, & 3ang ---maybe these guys were on their way to join Youseff and Ahmed. Kind of odd that pipe bombs have been found in vehicles from FL in such a close period of time. I am in the process of indexing such info by keyword floridaterrorists. I'd appreciate pings to any more info re the SC dudes.

Below are some local articles re Atta and other terror concerns in Jacksonville FL.

Nope. Garden Variety idiots. From the Sun Sentinel: "Haugh asked the men what the devices were for, and the front seat passenger, identified as Aaron Spoerke, 21, of suburban Lake Worth, replied: "They are pipe bombs. I like to throw them into canals and watch them explode," according to the police report.

Spoerke later told police that he and driver, Raymond Kramer, 22, also of suburban Lake Worth, bought the gunpowder at a local gun shop, fuses from a fireworks store, and used PVC from Spoerke's job as a plumber, police said.

They built three devices, and detonated one before meeting up with the two other passengers in the car Wednesday morning, he told police. He said the other passengers did not know the homemade bombs were in the car.

Police charged Spoerke and Kramer with making/possessing a destructive device. They also searched both men's homes and turned up a third pipe bomb and more bomb-making material, police said."

"Three suspects are from suburban Lake Worth. The fourth is from Boynton Beach. Their ages range from 21 to 22. Police are not releasing their names."

~~~~~~~
Excerpt - FBI's (9/11) Hijacker List:
1. Satam A.M. Al Suqami
Al Suqami said his date of birth was June 28, 1976, and that he was from the United Arab Emirates. He had a Florida driver's license with a Boynton Beach address and said that his previous license was from Saudi Arabia.
2. Waleed M. Alshehri
He is a possible Saudi national. Alshehri is said to have given seven different dates of birth for himself on various documents, ranging from 1974 to 1979. He's believed to have been in the U.S. since at least 1994, when he got a Social Security card and a Florida driver's license.
Alshehri graduated in 1997 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., and had a commercial pilot's license.
Besides Daytona Beach, he is believed to have lived in Hollywood, Fla.; Boynton Beach, Fla., where a neighbor describes him as a nice guy who was a fan of the Florida Marlins; and Vienna, Va., at a boarding house three blocks away from the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Alshehri is said to have moved out of the boarding house 14 months ago, telling the landlord he was returning to Saudi Arabia, his homeland.
The week after the hijackings, the FBI raided a hotel in Newton, Ma., a Boston suburb, on suspicion that both Waleed Alshehri and Wail Alshehri stayed there on Sept. 10.
He used the following dates of birth: Sept. 13, 1974; Jan. 1, 1976; March 3, 1976; July 8, 1977; Dec. 20, 1978; May 11, 1979; Nov. 5, 1975.
3. Wail Alshehri
Alshehri, who is believed to have been a pilot, gave his date of birth as July 31, 1973, and may have lived in Hollywood, Fla., and Newton, Mass.
4. Mohammed Atta
He is a possible Egyptian national.
He used the birthday Sept. 1, 1968.
Aliases include: Mehan Atta; Mohammad El Amir; Muhammad Atta; Mohamed El Sayed; Mohamed Elllsayed; Muhammad Muhammad Al Amir Awag Al Sayyid Atta; Muhammad Muhammad Al-Amir Awad Al Sayad.
Identified by the FBI as the man who piloted the first plane to crash into the World Trade Center, Atta is said to have met early this year with the head of the Iraqi intelligence service, a report Iraq denies.
Atta, who had an Egyptian driver's license, is also reported to have met with several Islamic extremists at a hotel at the Spanish beach resort Salou.
At times he used the name Mohamed El-Amir, as he did for eight years while an electrical engineering student at the Technical University in Hamburg, Germany, where he had ties to an Islamic group that planned attacks on Amrican targets, and lived with Marwan Al-Shehhi, a cousin who also appears on the FBI's hijacker list.
The two men are believed to have arrived in the U.S. in May. Atta lived in Venice, Coral Springs, and Hollywood, Fla., where he may have used public computers at two libraries, and where he and Al-Shehhi were spotted partying the Friday before Sept. 11, playing video games and drinking. Based on an eyewitness identification, investigators believe Atta was one of a group of five men holed up in the Valencia Hotel in Laurel, Md., in August and September, driving an older model Toyota Corolla with California license plates.
Video surveillance photos of the airport in Portland, Me., show Atta and Abdulaziz Alomari rushing to make a flight from Maine to Boston early on the morning of the hijackings.
5. Abdulaziz Alomari
He is a possible Saudi national.
Seen with Mohammed Atta on airport surveillance video, Alomari is said to have used both Dec. 24, 1972 and May 28, 1979 as his date of birth. He is believed to have been a pilot and a flight engineer who listed an address in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and said he at one time worked for the aircraft maintenance company Saudi Flight Ops, at JFK Airport.
Alomari may have lived in Hollywood, Fla. and is reported to have lived with his wife and four school-age children in a rented house in Vero Beach, Fla., moving out on Sept. 3, telling his landlord he was returning home.
United Airlines #175- Boeing 767
7:58 a.m. departed Boston for Los Angeles 9:05 a.m. crashed into South Tower of the World Trade Center
1. Marwan Al-Shehhi
Al-Shehhi, 23, was a cousin of Mohammed Atta, lived with him in Germany and Venice, Fla., the two men taking flight training at the same schools in Venice and Opa-Locka, Fla. He used May 9, 1978 as his birthdate.
Aliases used: Marwan Yusif Muhammad Rashid Al-Shel; Marwan Yusif Muhammad Rashid Lakrab Al-Shihhi; Abu Abdullah
In Hamburg, he had ties to an Islamic group which planned attacks on American targets and a senior official in the United Arab Emirates says authorities are checking the possibility that he might have been a member of Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorist group.
Born in the United Arab Emirates, the son of a Muslim cleric who died two years ago, Al-Shehhi was described as extremely religious and withdrawn.
While in Germany, he told his mother he would not return to the Emirates. She has said she thought someone was listening to their calls and threatening him to keep him from coming home.
Boeing 757 manuals and East Coast flight maps were found in a Deerfield Beach, Florida, motel where Al-Shehhi is believed to have stayed. Separately, it is reportd that Al-Shehhi and Atta were spotted in Switzerland last summer, buying pocket knives and box cutters, the weapon of choice in the Sept. 11 hijackings.
2. Fayez Rashid Ahmed Hassan Al Qadi Banihammad
Aliases include: Fayez Ahmad; Banihammad Fayez Abu Dhabi Banihammad; Fayez Rashid Ahmed; Banihammad Fayez; Rasid Ahmed Hassen Alqadi; Abu Dhabi Banihammad Ahmed Fayez, Faez Ahmed.
May have lived in Delray Beach, Fla. The Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla., is listed as the address on his pilot's license but the school says there is no record that he ever took a class there. Mohammed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi are reported to have visited that same flight school, considering it for training, which they then pursued elsewhere.
3. Ahmed Alghamdi
He used the alias Ahmed Salah Alghamdi.
Little information has surfaced except that he may have lived in Delray Beach, Fla., and that he is reported to have lived briefly at a Vienna, Virginia, boarding house near CIA headquarters. Waleed M. Alshehri is also reported to have lived in that same Vienna house.
4. Hamza Alghamdi
4. Ziad Jarrahi
Is believed to have been a pilot.
Aliases: Zaid Jarrahi; Zaid Samr Jarrah; Ziad S. Jarrah; Ziad Jarrah Jarrat; Ziad Samir Jarrahi.
FAA records show a Hamburg, Germany, pilot's license listing for a similar name, Ziad Jarrah.
According to motel records, a man by that name used a credit card to pay for a late August stay at the Pin Del motel in Laurel, Md., where Nawaq Alhamzi stayed in September. Jarrah gave a Florida address and driver's license number when he registered at the motel.
The Rewards For Justice Program, United States Department of State, is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading directly to the capture of Adnan G. El Shukrijumah.
The family of Adnan G. el-Shukrijumah has been holed up in its modest, single-family home in a working-class neighborhood of Miramar, near Fort Lauderdale, since almost immediately after the Federal Bureau of Investigation posed a worldwide bulletin on Thursday declaring Mr. Shukrijumah, 27, an "imminent threat" who could be planning a terrorist attack on the United States.
Late this afternoon, Mr. Shukrijumah's brother emerged before a horde of reporters and declared his brother's innocence. "I don't understand why when the war started they put him on TV," said Nabil el-Shukri, the man's 21-year-old brother. "They don't have no evidence, nothing." But family members could not explain why they had no phone number or address for him and said they had not been in regular contact with him for about three years.
"I wouldn't say he is in hiding but he's not in contact with us," said Mr. Shukrijumah's father, Shaykh Gulshair el-Shukrijumah, 73, who came here in 1995 from Saudi Arabia and has become the leader of the nearby Masjid Al-Hijrar mosque.
