According to someone on an earlier thread here, PVC is used because the resulting bomb can go through x-rays without detection. They then apparently pack the explosives in something that can also go through x-ray machines (not the usual nails and metal shrapnel, in other words).
It probably wouldn’t do a lot of damage relative to other types of bombs, but I’m sure it would be pretty bad in an airplane cabin or even the baggage hold.

Nope. Garden Variety idiots. From the Sun Sentinel: "Haugh asked the men what the devices were for, and the front seat passenger, identified as Aaron Spoerke, 21, of suburban Lake Worth, replied: "They are pipe bombs. I like to throw them into canals and watch them explode," according to the police report. Good grief. How can anyone be so dumb, especially coming after last week's news about the guys in SC. Except these idiots probably don't even follow the news. It's beyond their reading level.
