The Two Things To Know Before Your City is Nuked By Terrorists
Townhall.com ^ | August 15, 2007 | Douglas MacKinnon

1.) Tragically, horrifyingly, but quite predictably, it’s going to happen. The only question being which American city or cities?

In a recent conversation with a former high level intelligence operative of our government, I raised the possibility of terrorists successfully detonating a nuclear weapon within the United States. His response was sobering in its hopelessness.

First, he stressed how grateful he was that he did not work in Washington, DC, and that his family lived far enough out to survive the coming nuclear blast. When I pressed him as to why he was so sure that Islamic terrorists – with or without the help of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez – would eventually hit DC or another American city with a nuclear weapon, his anger boiled out.

He pointed the finger squarely at our politicians and our politically correct, left-leaning media, who, in his opinion, have “sealed our fate.” He spoke of politicians from both sides of the aisle who consider border security nothing more than a cheap tool to be used for their reelection and enrichment. He despaired about a media that not only gleefully leaks our nation’s most trusted secrets for partisan gain, but then willingly acts as a propaganda tool for the very terrorists intent on our total destruction.

He warned of the hundreds of “loose nukes” floating around our planet. He patiently explained that the former Soviet Union (no matter what they or our government claim), can’t account for a number of their nuclear warheads. That North Korea may well have a few they are willing to sell to terrorists to prop up their totalitarian regime. That Pakistan – already a nuclear power – may soon fall victim to the Islamic extremists trying to overthrow that government. Of an Iran further ahead in their development of nuclear weapons than thought. And last, but not least, he spoke of the thousands of cruise missiles unaccounted for around the world. A number of those missiles being nuclear tipped.

In short, because of what he portrayed as a “betrayal by those sworn to protect us,” a nuclear attack within our nation, in his mind, is “inevitable.”

2.) When said attack comes, you and your family are on your own. Period. My friend stressed that “our government won’t be there to help us. It is broken beyond repair and incapable of assisting those most affected by the blast.”

He talked of critical infrastructures like water, electricity, fuel, banks, our food supply, medical services, police and firefighters, being unavailable for weeks or months. He warned of the blind panic that would follow such an explosion. Of the looting, of neighbor turning on neighbor to take what they don’t have for their own survival. Of our economy suffering an economic loss in the trillions of dollars.

Knowing this, are you prepared? Can you and your family ride out the frighteningly unpredictable weeks or months following the loss of an American city and its inhabitants? If you are not in the city hit, can you survive?

You must ask yourself this question. For, unless there is a miraculous epiphany about to be visited upon our self-centered politicians, then such an attack is certain.

If our politicians and the voters continue to suicidally put party and partisan politics before the welfare and security of our nation, then the terrorists will find the opening to hit us.

Our government and media are failing us. Prepare for the worst.

Yeah and all of Manhattan has fled due to the WTC bombing and radiation worry. Go away!

So, in other words, you are having no luck so far in proving your assertion that the claims made in the article are the same as statements made by the Vice President.

"Scaremongering by a clueless asshat."

I spent 11 years as an covert Agency tech officer. I agree with every word written. Please back up your "clueless" statement.

I lost a house in hurricane Andrew. There was no civil authority, of any type, in my neighborhood for 6 weeks. I lived in a gated community and were able to keep out looters out only by standing guard with rifles and shotguns. There was no food, no water and we didn’t get elecricity back for almost a YEAR.

Now granted a small nuke will not be as anywhere near as destructive as Andrew. But detonated in a dense population area that will be of little solace to those affected. If 5-7 cities are hit simultaneously you will see martial law and lawlessness far beyond your very optimistic imagination.

Oh, of course.

Please back up your "clueless" statement.

The author needs to back up his ridiculous statement that all essential services and the rule of law would cease to exist for months if a terrorist nuclear attack occurred.

That is pure conjecture, unsubstantiated by any previous disaster response, for which he offers zero corroboratory information.

Bluetone006,

You are very brave. Now that you’ve called to question wideawake’s clueless comment, you are about to be called confused and ignorant.

Be forewarned, been there done that. This guy has killed this thread faster than an atomic bomb.

When Manhattan is declared evacuated by your certitude, I will be happy to also address your other strawman.

Until then, take a hike.

The ordinary citizens would calm down fairly quickly and restore order on their own and eventually gov't would begin to function again when it is quiet enough.

No one claimed that Manhattan was entirely evacuated down to the last person, merely that hundreds of thousands of people - including many Manhattan residents - evacuated Manhattan on 9/11.

That incontrovertibly happened.

Of course, your assertion that nothing in the article hasn't already been said by the Vice President is just wrong.

The article makes ridiculous and unjustifiable claims.

Seen this happen on Christmas day. No cars, no pedestrians, nobody in town. Don't know where they go.

That's what experience demonstrates - and of course, the government in this instance has a number of contingency plans that are not predicated on waiting for a request of assistance by state officials.

Believe whatever you want. You have obviously never been in the ****. I’m telling you the veneer of society that we live in is thinner than you believe.

Go back to sleep. Everything will be ok. The government will protect you.

I am believe what I have seen with my own eyes and not your anonymous claims of omniscience.

Our armed forces will indeed protect us. As they always have, despite the carping of "tech officers."

It is in individual cases. However society is robust and has shown it exists because of the sum of individual behaviors. The ten percent who can keep their heads in the crisis will carry the ninety percent. Gov't does not create society, society creates the state and the state creates the gov't.

That isn't the same as the rule of law. I have shot at (well near) people I thought were looters. Maybe they were and maybe they were not. The "lawfulness" of my act was borderline.

There could be some rough spots. Restoration of the legal system would come later. There is no way the officers of the state can cover the territory in that kind of crisis, and they actually cannot do it now without the aid of the ordinary citizens.

Our armed forces are the best in the world, overall. Unfortunately, in the event of a multi-city attack they will be able to protect us just as well as they did in Miami and New Orleans.

... and the glorious troops of the patriotic fatherland will march forth..... yeesh.

Again, many on this thread fail to note that an attack is immediately a federal matter while a natural disaster is not.

There were National Guard troops in Manhattan the morning after 9/11.

I'm not ashamed to say that I love my country and that I have the highest confidence in our armed forces.

I never expected to be taunted for it on this site, however.
