Conservatives Scold Va. GOP, Urge Change In Leadership

RICHMOND, Aug. 14 -- Anti-tax conservatives launched a revolt against the Republican leaders of the General Assembly on Tuesday, calling for GOP legislators to replace House Speaker William J. Howell and warning that the party risks steep losses in the November election unless the "abusive driver" fees are repealed.

At a news conference to discuss a lawsuit aimed at abolishing the transportation bill approved in April, several anti-tax activists said they and other conservatives might sit out the Nov. 6 election because Howell (R-Stafford) and other GOP leaders are defending the fees and other aspects of the legislation.

"This bill is a dramatic policy failure," said John Taylor, president of the Virginia Institute for Public Policy, a conservative think tank. "We believe it is unconstitutional and demonstrated a political ineptness that is stunning in an election year. The Republican grass roots needs to ask their leadership, 'What were you thinking?' "

In this day and age, as a Virginian, I would rather want to know what our Delegates and Senators were smoking, snorting, injecting, etc. when they passed such shameful legislation.

The fact that the bunch of RINOs running the party inside the General Assembly ramrodded a piece of legislation through that favors undocumented tourists (illegal aliens) really isn't a surprise.

It's time to remove these pukes from positions of leadership, and they should be removed in the next primary.

Yeah, cuz the hardline conservative campaigns of Mark Earley in 2001, Jerry Kilgore in 2005, and George Allen in 2006 were SOOO successful.

One of these days, these idiots will understand that the votes in Virginia are to be had in the densely populated suburbs, not Southwestern Virginia.

How do you explain Bolling and McDonnell - both sharply to the right of Kilgore - winning in 2005?

Kilgore was an abysmal failure as a candidate as was Early. Allen took the race for granted.

Allen didn’t run a hardline conservative campaign. He ran to the left of Webb, accusing him of being a male chauvinist pig. That, not macaca, was one of the things that lost it for him.

All over the country, the real legacy of Karl Rove is the RINO “leadership” he helped install.

Either that “leadership” is going to be purged, or the Grand Old Party is headed the way of the Whigs.

Anyone who supports RINOs is in fact working to destroy the Republican Party.

That is a warning they can take to the bank. Some people are going to lose their jobs.

With his sorry staff and advisor's, you could say he was out of it before "Macaca". Never could figure how a man could hire such sorry people.

He was prepping for his Presidential run, and brought in “presidential” advisors who seemed clueless. I couldn’t believe what these people were saying on conference calls. It left me speechless — and for those who read my posts here, realise I talk like I write, so being speechless is a rare thing for me.

Yes, look at what he's done in Florida, with Crist and Fernandez, and the California Austrian! He's done a number of good things, but RINO-raising is a terrible black mark.

Aren’t these the same creeps who kicked Kate Obenshain out as party chairman?

Just my corroboration as a come-here about Virginia GOP: It is truly a poorly run, and poorly articulated bunch. My "republican" state senator is simply a weasel, a "RINO" I guess some would say.

I think something similar about Thelma Drake, the Republican congresswoman. Conservative voting maybe, but a slimy "I'm for everybody" PR presence.

Just like the national problem, there is NO sense of values, NO statement of principle, and hence NO leadership.

America is ripe for dictatorship because of weasels, ala the Julius Caesar caper. I guess it will be Hillary.

Then, your contention is that the Republicans should sponsor even more legislation that favors illegal aliens over American citizens who are residents of Virginia?

Or am I simply misunderstanding your reference.

BTW, George Allen has never really run a "hardline" Conservative campaign ~ his opponent, Webb, ran a campaign that actually attracted large numbers of anti-semites ~ and that effort was aided by the Washington Post, and we know what they are.

I took a lot of heat here during the campaign for criticizing how it was being run. I agree completely with Webb's old position on women in combat and believe that Allen's campaign was not only wrong to attack it but suicidal. What kind of conservative attacks a man for pointing out that women do not belong in ground combat?

Every mention of the issue served to remind Virginians of Webb's stellar military credentials. Could not have been a dumber move.
