Don’t these small earthquakes mess up your houses, weaken the construction, crack the bricks and stucco? After years and years of these small earthquakes it seems that your house would be a wreck.

Checking in to see how ya’ll are doing this morning.

Looks like all was quiet over nite.

Good.

Boy nothing like getting the old adrenaline rush when feeling the earth move.

Seems like we tend to (jmo) get our shakes here on the west coast in the night or wee hours of the morning.

Not like in the mid day.

Anyone else think that too?

We’re in Simi Valley, about 7 miles from the epicenter. It was a hard sharp jolt. My first reaction was that it was about a 5 magnitude, but a few minutes later I downgraded that a bit on the basis that because it was so short it was probably near by. So I’m pleased with my magnitude estimation ability.

My wife slept through the quake and didn’t even realize it had happened till I told her. What woke her up was the cats jumping off the bed. (One of our cats is 16 years old and went through the Northridge quake. That really traumatized her against any loud bangs or rumbles. It was three days before we could find her or calm her down, especially with all the aftershocks, but at least we caught glimpses of her so we knew she was still alive.)

This morning we discovered that our hot water heater was overflowing. It appears that the overflow connector on top was damaged by the quake. But I haven’t seen anything else broken or tipped over.

Add to ALL preparedness kits: Green cash money....suprising how that can come in handy (as with us during the Northridge shaker) when the power’s out for a few days.

The old VA hospital in Sylmar collapsed. That was the location of the most casualties.

I lived in Glendale for that one, and remember it well. When I went to work, which was at Burbank Cold Storage, there were 50 gallon drums of frozen OJ and strawberries in all the aisles - and the place stayed pretty much shut down during the aftershock period.

We knew a couple who lived up a hilly street in Sylmar and they had no water for months, the mains were so shattered. They told us about water trucks stationed around the neighborhoods and doing the YMCA shower thing.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, but a six-lane bridge in the city of Santa Clarita, about 12 miles north of Chatsworth, was closed as a precaution after a routine post-quake inspection raised some concerns.

Sheriff’s deputies found minor cracking and small chunks of fallen concrete in the Whites Canyon Bridge that connects to a busy state route.

Officials shut down the bridge for further inspection and traffic was rerouted, said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz.

“We don’t know if the cracks were preexisting,” said sheriff’s Deputy Mark Wood.

Whites Canyon Bridge, which is 300 feet long, opened about 15 years ago.

This is the second Freeper reference to those of us in California falling of the face of the earth!

Where is your humanity?

Where is your integrity?

YOUR nastiness caused the response.

That’s true. Generally you don’t get a warning when the quakes come. That can be disconcerting to be sure.

Thanks for the note. Good luck with your Hurricaines. They’re a big headache to be sure.

We survived ‘94 Northridge in Sherman Oaks (Van Nuys/Magnolia). Wife slightly burned. Lost one cat. Building green-tagged, but entire contents destroyed. PTSD x 2, treated therapeutically.

Now living in Texas. Take care, SFV.

That’s interesting about your place of employement and your friends in Sylmar. That juice must have been a sight to behold. The water pipe replacement must have been a real headache. It would kill me to have to go out for a shower like that.

I clicked the post button and read those “to be sure” comments as the screen changed. I had to acknowledge the mistake. I was up until about five and I’m still a little zoned. Oh well...

Have a great day.
