I know plenty of drunk Marines who have started a few as well. During my youth, I was responsible for a few as well.

I have spent 20 years in the Corps and will say honestly, if I owned a bar no Marine below the rank of Staff Sergeant would be allow in the doors, with or without a date.

I was living in San Francisco and spent a lot of time in the Haight in the summer of ‘67 - having just finished my Rat year at VMI - with my high and tight and, like you, I was never hassled. I wasn’t in uniform but I did have plenty of conversations in which I was open about being at a military academy, and never had any disrespect either. People were pretty much into their own thing, stoned to be sure, but most of what was happening in SF wasn’t political. That was a different environment from the harsh anti-war sentiments that were prevalent around the campuses (the FSM in Berkeley for exmple and the big antiwar demonstrations in Oakland) and in the major cities after 1968. The real nastiness towards soldiers was never from the real hippies, it was the college students, who frankly had and still have bad consciences about their yellow streaks.

Maybe the bar is run by ex-navy guys who are afraid of marines. :)

Smile when you say that,......oh, never mind.

This policy is absolue bravo sierra. I’d suggest the gyrenes dress in civvies and two of them walk in. When confronted by the bounce bitch, one of them can just say “well, hey, I’m gay and this is mah bitch.”

If the bounce bitch doesn’t like it, well....

“Maybe the bar is run by ex-navy guys who are afraid of marines.”

Sorry to tell you but the population of which you speak is zero. Sailors and gyrenes get along pretty well, all things considered.

“The reason for the limitation, at least given by the manager, seems just, as a person who lived in Jacksonville, NC, I can tell you a large number of young marines out for a night on the town together, unfortunately can fall victim to boys will be boys and end up causing issues.

I respect and commend our men in uniform, but I also know first hand what a pack of them in an intoxicated state can do... especially ones fresh out of bootcamp with more testosterone than good sense after a bit of alcohol.”

I recall (sort of) many nights in Subic Bay in the Philippines. Typically, there was a fleet in town with thousands of young sailors, many of whom (most) had plenty of testosterone and plenty of booze at play.

I can’t recall one single altercation. There were also a lot of Marines around. No problems to speak of and this was during the Viet Nam war.

This whole thing about service people being a nuisance is ridiculous; they are no more a nuisance than a bunch of local nancy boys and, Lord knows, there are a lot of THEM around these days, including a few on this thread.

Does that mean I was wrongfully prosecuted, convicted and tossed into the Brig for the balance of the weekend -- WRONGFULLY?

Apparently.

Couldnt you break out of the brig? You know, like they do in the movies. :-)

Wasn’t the Hawk and Dove the bar where Patches Kennedy got a bad ice cube before loading up on Amvient and going out for a midnight vote?

Maybe, I don’t know....I seem to recall something with Kennedy there.

I just know a lot of ‘back history’ has taken place there over the decades....and West Wing wouldn’t have featured it repeatedly without some left leaning reason.

If your bar is the scene of regular skirmishes because marines in groups are starting problems, it doesn’t matter what the Marine Corp is doing to them after the fact... your bar gets a rep and your business declines, not to mention the perpetual raise in your insurance rates for filing claims.

The reasons given in this article are completely justified, if you believe they are wrong, open a bar near a marine base, particularly one thats full of newer single recruits and you can set the rules however you like.

You are welcome to open a bar near a base, particularly one full of new recruits, and set whatever rules you wish. I’ve seen enough of it first hand to have no issues with this policy for the reasons stated.

how did the door guy know they were marines? did they show their id's even though they were not in uniform? why not just show another id?

just being devil's advocate here, but i have been to bars where military have started fights. usually over girls. it ain't pretty. this bar owner is trying to protect himself from property damage and lawsuits. makes sense to me.

i feel i should clarify: i also have a job that is looked down upon by certain bars. for similar reasons as in this article. you cannot take personal offense to these situations. they make these rules for the lowest common denominator. the guys who go out looking for fights and get too drunk.

i know i am not one of these guys and i feel sorry for the guys who need to do such things. i respect the bars for making rules to protect themselves. i don't like that these bad guys are making it difficult for me.

plus, i try not to show my ID if it can be avoided. just my regular license.

If I remember correctly, during inspections, the brig is where Chesty used to go to find the REAL Marines!

Ooorah!

Do you think this is a reasonable policy for a bar to adopt?

There's far too many other things in life to get upset about, I'd just keep walking till I found another bar.

On the lighter side, "solos" would probably be more than welcome at any gay bars......

how did the door guy know they were marines?

Just a guess, but they were probably sporting the ol' "high and tight," i.e., the birth control haircut.

That pub is infamous as the place that helped Patrick Kennedy get sloshed before his "3am vote trip"

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=50071

Re being able to spot them as Marines, they were stationed at Marine Barracks - so they'd for sure have the very recognizable 'whitewall' haircuts.

I am praying that the number of Marines who are concerned about these kinds of things is extremely small.
