New York authorities were questioning three men found in a bizarre submersible vessel floating just off Manhattan on Friday, according to local reports. The men were discovered early Friday near the cruise terminal in Brooklyn where the massive ocean liner The Queen Mary II is moored, ABC television reported on its website.
When asked about the incident, a police spokeswoman declined to confirm the report or provide any further information, saying only that officers were at the scene.
What the three men were doing in the vessel -- which appeared to be spherical with a circular hatch on top -- was not immediately clear.
According to ABC, there was no indication that the discovery was terror-related -- a constant fear in New York following the September 11 Al-Qaeda attacks on New York.
ABC's radio affiliate WABC reported that the vessel was equipped with oxygen tanks.
The problem with submersibles of this type is not submerging, it’s re-surfacing.
Bump for exploding oxygen tanks.
You’ll put your eye out kid...
What’s the last thing you hear from a redneck before he dies?
“Hey y’all. Watch this!”
Sound Muslim to you?
Philip "Duke" Riley, performance artist and sculptor.
Seems to have a fixation with things aquatic.
You put it together and it was a cardboard box with printing on the outside to vaguely suggest it was a submarine.
The “rockets” were little plastic Mercury-type capsules about 3 inches in diameter, and you “launched” them by putting them on the end of a plastic tube that had a bulb on the other end that you would compress by hitting it with your hand - the air pressure would make them pop off. The launch tube stuck out through the cardboard.
The “torpedoes” were little 6” plastic things you shot through a cardboard tube with a rubber band.
Kind of disappointing, but I played with it for weeks.
I think you over state the case....
I believe the Hunley killed it's own crew three times. Neither the Turtle nor any of the replicas I have heard of ever killed anyone.
Reread that and let me know if you understand it now.
Wow. Lots of memories...I wanted that baby, too.
Yeah, we'd take it down to the lake, and cruise around underwater looking at all the skinny-dippers through the periscope. And I remember the time we did a torpedo run on the Lady of the Lake....
Ah, those were the days.
Sven, Olaf, and Dagmar up to no good?
I did see mention in a story that it was a copy of the “Turtle”. But I do not believe the original had oxygen tanks.
“I highly doubt that.”
We will know when more facts make the news, but I can see where they would be a good idea. If it was indeed a copy of the Turtle. One of the downsides of it, and the much later confederate sub Hunley was the fact they could not stay down very long at all. At least no without a snorkel. I do wanna see more on this interesting story.
That’s so cool. What a great photo! Someone’s having fun for $6.98!
