Just turned on the news. 35W bridge collapsed in the Mississippi River. Cars, trucks, semis.....
Fires burning, tanker trucks, at least one school bus, more than ten cars......
Just now breaking.......
60 kids on school bus, 10 taken to hospital, reunited with their parents.
I don’t know what caused the bridge to collapse, but here is an article snippet:

MINNEAPOLIS —
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “20-30 construction workers were on the bridge at the time of the collapse, working on a re-construction project. The bridge was built in 1967.”
6 fatalities confirmed
Another bridge failure mode is the pilings being scoured by current.
Don’t know how fast the Missisippi runs there.
Absolutely not! Engineering problems arise at temps lower than ~10 in steel and cycling around the freezing point of water. this is far from the boiling point of water, and the central concern is just that the different expansion rates are accomodated for in the design. Problems arise when people fail to analyze the design and situation. In this case it's the effect of the cracks, what caused them, and what the new stressesin the bridge look like. Other than the effect of water, the steel and concrete ect... follow the Kelvin temp scale. They had failures with stress redistributions that they failed to recognize.
Thank the Lord. I bet Cib is still shaking his head.
Fox doesn’t have a clue about the school bus.
sorry, this info comes from the press conference. they are returning to rescue operations and will report again in 1-2 hrs with update. family center setup at holiday inn.
hottie Mayor too
The local news has been talking about it, but who knows if it was actually a structural issue or just “cosmetic,” time will tell.
I think it may turn out to be a combination of factors. Old Bridge. Traffic narrowed and slowed due to the construction. Maybe the jackhammer could have caused some harmonics. And I believe there was a train going under the bridge at the time.

I had to turn it from Greta...ugh!
cnn saya, 6 known dead.
All the pilings are on dry land.
Prayers up to all involved. I live in a nearby suburb and was near that bridge yesterday. Waiting on the live MN-DOT report...
It has been in the mid 90’s for two straight weeks.
The bridge is 40 years old.
It is a four lane bridge, down to one lane during construction.
Stopped traffic during rush hour.
C’mon........
They said they could only see the one.I don’t think they know.
Hip hip hooray.
Half the reason there were so many cars there I bet is because that choo choo train has screwed up the freeway in that area. I tried to turn around the other week and ended up going north on 35w thinking I could get back to south 35w by just going off an exit ramp and crossing the overpass, you know... but the southbound entry ramps were all closed just about up to Roseville.
Not the same. There’s 35W and 35E.
