Aquafina Source Is Same as for Tap

NEW YORK -

So you thought that water in your Aquafina bottle came from some far-away spring bubbling deep in a glen? Try the same place as the water in your tap.

PepsiCo Inc. (nyse: PEP - news - people ) is the latest company to offer some clarity about the source of its top-selling bottled water as it announced on Friday it would change the label on Aquafina water bottles to spell out that the drink comes from the same source as tap water.

A group called Corporate Accountability International has been pressuring bottled water sellers to curb what it calls misleading marketing practices. The group has criticized PepsiCo over its blue Aquafina label with a mountain logo as perpetuating the misconception that the water comes from spring sources.

Aquafina is the single biggest bottled water brand, and its bottles are now labeled "P.W.S." The new labels will spell out "public water source."

"If this helps clarify the fact that the water originates from public sources, then it's a reasonable thing to do," PepsiCo spokeswoman Michelle Naughton said Friday. Aquafina water is taken from public sources then purified in a seven-step process.

I remember a couple of years ago when some fancy spring water from France was tested and found to have benzene, the organic chemical that is biggest cause of cancer and is likely from a gasoline station leak. The Federal government makes local water utilities spend big, big bucks each quarter to test for everything under the sun, things you have never heard of, in parts per billion but might, if you're that one in a millionth person, get some cancer after drinking it and nothing else for 70 years.

You are just as well off to drink tap water AFTER you put a simple filter on it to remove lead (from lead solder previously used to solder copper pipes) and to remove chlorine put in the water to kill bacteria.

Personally, I like the calcium-rich hard water here in the southwest for drinking, though it is hell on plumbing. Don't drink RO water without an additional source of minerals (vitamins) as you need the natural minerals in water.

Dasani water is from the UK. That’s out for me too. Think of who may be bottling that stuff. I’m just saying.
