House of Representatives Tightens Protections for Dogs and Cats in Farm Bill
Humane Society of the United States HSUS ^ | july 28th, 2007 | DancesWithCats

The Humane Society of the United States applauded a move by the U.S. House of Representatives late last night to strengthen the federal protections for pets and laboratory animals. The House accepted an amendment to the Farm Bill by Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) that prevents stolen pets from being sold into research, bars the use of live animals in medical device sales demonstrations and increases fines for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

One provision of the legislation is a response to a recent high-profile incident earlier this year at the Cleveland Clinic, in which a staff member demonstrated a medical device on a live dog as a sales gimmick. Another provision is in response to recent investigations of "Class B" dealers who have been known to traffic in family pets for research.

"Animals in research must be treated humanely, not used frivolously, and must be not be obtained from disreputable sources," said Wayne Pacelle, HSUS president and CEO. "This action by the Congress clamps down on the few unscrupulous animal dealers who steal or procure family pets for research, and will put a stop to a demonstration procedure that the vast majority of people in the biomedical research community consider unethical."

...but these amendments would do good things for our animals and needs to be passed, IMHO. Your a sick puppy. ZOT may be in your future.

... I stated that I questioned the Farm Bill in its totality. It needs to be revamped.

You resorted to name calling and threats. Personal attacks are against the rules, bud. Do you have an intelligent opinion? So state it. That's why I post. I want to see what other intelligent people have to say about a subject, not mud-sling, which is so easy and takes no thought at all. To be glib is NOT contributing to the debate.

There are times I think FR is being taken over by liberals.

As long as the USA isn't being taken over by them. /s

We didn’t have “medical research” in 1776.

check out the site NAVS..national antivivisectionist Society...I contribute to them. They are a rational, scientific supported group who is anti animal research in a logical way.

They also point out that much of the animal research leads us astray scientifically cause it does not apply to humans. Also, other research methods are now much more advanced and effective.

The vast majority of animal research now is a racket that “makes it look like “ the company has “tested” its products and the only benefit is to the “researchers”..monetarily.

Actually there was lots of medical research going on in the late 18th Century. But why let a little thing like documented historical fact get in the way of trashing the US Constitution.

I think this is a very important subject and am happy that you have brought it to our attention.

Why aren't squirrels pets?

They're cute little furry things. They're not large, noisy and smelly like dogs. They are not the cold blooded killers of baby birds, cute little lizards and pretty much all creatures smaller than they, like cats are.

Some people shoot, skin, cook and eat squirrels. I know that some of you who live in the land of no guns will find this hard to believe, but it's true.

People think all cats and dogs should be neutered to keep the population down, but eating some of them would accomplish the same thing and I think in the long run be more humane.

Think about it. Would you prefer a life of no sex, ever, if it came with the guarantee of always being provided food and shelter? Why do you think your best friend would prefer it?

And humans are animals. Why aren't we neutering them in places where they have more babies than the environment they live in can support. For that matter, why don't we package and eat them?

We hear all the time of places where it is so sad that millions are starving. Isn't the solution obvious?

Would you let your child starve if there was a tasty neighbor handy? What about old people who are just sort of waiting to die? Why aren't they fair game, so to speak.

And why abort all these babies? Why not let them be born, then shipped to India, mixed with a little curry and served with rice? Is it really more humane to kill them in the womb?

If so, why? A new baby would not be an inconvenience or hardship to a woman if it disappeared from her life as soon as it was born. She was just going to kill it and flush it down the toilet anyway.

Do you think the starving children in India, or elsewhere, would care what their Spam or Livermush was made of?

But some of you would say, "People are more special. It would be monstrous, horrible, barbaric and inhumane to eat them." If that's true, then would it not be more humane to save the starving children by feeding them your pets?

Why isn't there a federal law proclaiming this? Isn't human life sacred? Would you let a child starve to death, in front of your eyes, to save your pet, or would you slice and dice the little furry animal and thus save a human life?

And if you knew that two million people were going to starve to death within the next couple months, would it not be more humane to keep one million of them alive by using the other one million as food?

Maybe we could keep starving children as pets instead of our little furry friends. Wouldn't that be more humane? No? You think it better that they starve?

Well, I find this issue to be very confusing but am happy to learn that my government has found another good way to spend tax money by creating another law.

Isn’t it the local “Humane Society” that kills strays in the end?

Doesn’t sound very “humane” to me. Seems like you ought to leave everything living if you want to treat them like we’d treat fellow humans.

This is what Fred Thompson was talking about in his federalism column the other day.

This needs to be vetoed big time.

I like your reasoning.

As we are doing in Iraq, we put soldiers (who are prepared to toast the enemy) there to lure Al Qaeda out rather than luring them to the US. The soldiers then wipe out Al Qaeda members.

Free Republic’s conservatives are soldiers for right, so we don’t mind it when liberal thinking gets espoused.

Conservatism wipes out liberalism every time.

Laws should and do reflect society's values & our feelings toward companion animals are part of this.

Read and ponder...

Emotional reactions to media stories by legislatures usually leads to bad laws that later allow for legitimized malfeasance and/or misfeasance.

I love my Husky who I got from "Canine Rescue" before he was put to death by needle because he was abandoned.

I found out why he was abandoned via compassion for life when he damn near destroyed my abode in total however being a conservative with a compassion for life, he is still alive and spoiled rotten!

He's learning to be a good conservative however and I would risk my life to protect him.

You seem to find yourself extremely witty and amusing. Perhaps a few others here share that view, but you really come across as bitter and nasty. You may want to save it for the libs.
