The Humane Society of the United States applauded a move by the U.S. House of Representatives late last night to strengthen the federal protections for pets and laboratory animals. The House accepted an amendment to the Farm Bill by Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) that prevents stolen pets from being sold into research, bars the use of live animals in medical device sales demonstrations and increases fines for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.
One provision of the legislation is a response to a recent high-profile incident earlier this year at the Cleveland Clinic, in which a staff member demonstrated a medical device on a live dog as a sales gimmick. Another provision is in response to recent investigations of "Class B" dealers who have been known to traffic in family pets for research.
"Animals in research must be treated humanely, not used frivolously, and must be not be obtained from disreputable sources," said Wayne Pacelle, HSUS president and CEO. "This action by the Congress clamps down on the few unscrupulous animal dealers who steal or procure family pets for research, and will put a stop to a demonstration procedure that the vast majority of people in the biomedical research community consider unethical."

No, just observant.
The only way to be sure there isn’t something more sinister in this bill is to see the amendment in its entirety. HSUS is famous for publicizing only part of its agenda, to get a gullible public to endorse something they’d never accept if the truth were known. HSUS is a known promoter of animal rights, not animal welfare.
Like it or not, the medical advances we enjoy today come from animal research. Like most people, I want to see it done in as humane a manner as is possible, but I don’t agree that it’s in our best interest to ban the use of animals in medical research.
I don’t trust HSUS one bit.
Socialist are the same people wanting to grant monkeys the same rights as humans.
Also, making it a Fed. manner when it is a State issue.
With this, future decisions will outlaw hunters from using dogs to coon hunt, hunt boar, bear and others. Riding horses could also be disallowed because of their ‘inhumane’ treatment.
Every step helps of course... it’s a good thing to see a glimmer of any respect for life.

As in millions of abortions? As in federal and state funding to provide them? I see your point.
Maybe if we stress importance on respect for animals, it will work it’s way back up to humans.
It’s not like tissues from the aborted are used for research. But I guess those are ‘approved research materials’ according to the AMA. /s

OK, folks, so you want to pay out $42B in pork to farmers and food stamp recipients just for the sake of a dog and cat amendment ?
Sheesh, folks, think. There are already laws on the books regarding animal cruelty and such. Why pay for the pork along with it ?

As with animals, I need to promote a financial directive to those inflicted with the disease of sorriness.
It affects us all.
A compassionate thought however most people prefer to sit on the "crapper" before they wipe their butt instead of wiping their butt and then sitting on the "crapper"
We go so far as to eat animals, BearCub. Live with it.

Pay VERY close attention to darnright’s post. I, like most people, believe animals should be treated humanely, and detest someone who is cruel to them.
However, I spent many years researching animal rights, and can tell you the HSUS has a radical agenda, and no matter how much the organization tries to downplay it, their mission is one of “animal rights,” more than “animal welfare.” There is a BIG difference.
I too would like to see the bill, and amendments, because I don’t trust them. The significant money they raise is not spent on bettering the lives of domestic, or other kinds of animals. The HSUS doesn’t spay, neuter, house, or feed animals, except on rare occassions (like hurricane Katrina) when they use the plight of animals to raise more money.
If you don’t believe me, research them. Their $$$$ are spent in a longterm effort to end animal agriculture, stop people from eating meat, wearing fur, hunting, fishing, pet ownership, and the use of animals for research.
BTW, a small number of dogs and cats are used for research. The majority of animal research is conducted on mice. I wish none were, but for now that is what we have to offer cures/treatments for diabetes, birth defects, heart disease, cancer, severe wounds, etc.
Be very skeptical when the HSUS supports something, and if you send your money to them, you are not only depriving struggling local shelters (that DO care for abandoned, overpopulated and abused animals), but you may be financing some things that will surprise you.

There are times I think FR is being taken over by liberals.
My palate is looking forward to "baby backs" this fine day but after your post, perhaps I would be more sated having one of my Porterhouse steaks!
