I”m not up on the latest Latin lingo :) what does that mean.
Carthago delende est
tranlsating to Carthage must be destroyed!
In the Roman Senate, the reknowned orator Cato the Elder delivered a series of fiery speeches calling for the elimination of the North African city-state of Carthage as a threat to Rome by ending each oration with,
“Carthago delenda est!!” (Carthage must be destroyed!”)
Now, as a high-school student of Latin, I could never figure out how the intransitive `est’ (”to be”) got translated into the transitive verb “must be destroyed”.
(Heu, constat non sum bonum studentum Latinae.)
