Could this author even imagine another reason? IF he was involved, I can understand where Vick was coming from. I grew up in Southern Louisiana where cockfighting was and will be legal until sometime next year. I’ve been going to cockfights since I was little, it’s part of my culture and a part that I embrace.

So what does that say about me? That I’m crazy? That I’ll move to people next? Absolutely not, and why should it. I don’t personify animals, there is no confusion between who is what. Animals don’t have rights to violate, people do and when one knows the difference I don’t see any problem with people fighting animals. Yes it’s senseless entertainment but so is going see some action flick, and I don’t see a moral difference between the two.

I’ve never been to a dog fight but I knew where they were taking place. Honestly the only thing that stopped me from going was the fear of getting arrested. Who knows, I might have been turned off by it but by no means does that imply I would support violating a persons right to do it.

This is an issue about individual rights. Dogfighting does not violate anyone’s and any law that would punish a person for action that does not violate another person’s rights is immoral.

That said, if the NFL has some inside rule banning dogfighting then Vick might have violated his contract there and should be punished, but within the NFL.

First, know that no one I know would call me an “animal rights” person of any sort. I believe God gave us dominion over the animal kingdom and, when it comes down to animals vs. people, I side with people.

Now, given what you wrote about cockfighting and “senseless entertainment” and there being no moral difference between that sort of thing and watching an “action flick,” I’m curious...

Do you believe there’s nothing morally wrong with people torturing animals (their own animals, of course)? In other words, should you and I be able to buy puppies or kittens or whatever and treat them any way we want, without any consequences whatsoever?

I believe in American culture and history, there are two animals that we as Americans demand good treatment of and that is dogs and horses. I think its just part of our culture and heritage. Cats? Thats another story.

Did you miss the part about them killing one of the dogs by throwing water on it and then electocuting it, or throwing one down on the ground to kill it. They don’t just enjoy the fights, but the cruelty of them, apparently.

Is that an appropriate part of culture?

Violence of this nature dehumanizes people, IMHO. No, they’re not going to become serial murderers any time soon, although cruelty to animals often precedes violence to people according to some studies.

Then, you have those wannabe’s that either train their pitbulls to fight, or don’t train against aggression, and they end up killing the neighbor’s kid (what a surprise).

I am no PETA animal rights dingdong, but what they and others have done with these dogs is shameful.

“Animals don’t have rights to violate, people do...”

All God’s creatures have right to be treated humanely, even those that we raise for food. If you truly see nothing evil about dog fighting or think it’s no different than watching an action flick (the action is just pretend...didn’t you know?) then your brain is too screwed up for me to even try to figure out. I hope that you don’t have pets. No need to respond, I really don’t want to hear from you.

"I’ve never been to a dog fight but I knew where they were taking place."

Glad someone finally said it. I'm originally a city boy who never heard of cock/dog fighting until I was stationed in Mississippi in '82. Like you I've never attended either a cock or dog fight but everyone knew where to go if you wanted to witness and bet on a fight. Again it's not my thing and I'm in no way defending Vick's actions but, I am a bit surprised by all of the "oh my God", coverage on this. Many folks who were raised or have lived in the south know this is a not so secretive part of the culture.
