President Bush yesterday said Americans will soon realize they need the immigrants and foreign temporary workers that would have been allowed by his immigration bill, which was defeated in the Senate last month.
Mr. Bush, in a town hall session in Nashville, Tenn., also refused to say whether he will pardon two U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug-smuggling suspect, saying the prosecutor was a friend of his who made his case to the jury that convicted the agents.
If Mr. Bush was hoping the immigration issue would disappear after his bill's failure, those hopes were dashed, as he was asked repeatedly about border security during the forum meant to highlight his commitment to cutting the deficit.
"The bill failed and I can't make a prediction to you at this point, sir, where it's going to head," the president told one questioner. "I can make you a prediction, though, that pretty shortly people are going to be knocking on people's doors saying, man, we're running out of workers."
Mr. Bush said there are workers who will do jobs Americans aren't doing in the agriculture sector in particular, and without them the jobs will go unfilled.

Yeah we'd all starve without Mexicans....sheesh....
No Jorge, evidently they don't.
They're an embarrassment to FreeRepublic.
I like the Colorado system for doing farm labor — use the prisoners. That would solve one problem in any state that needs farm labor.
I read this three times and cannot believe this man I supported four times is saying this. It is still hard to comprehend why?
Well, they gotta pray to their false w prophet... or the rug would be pulled out from under their altars...
I live in the midwest. Legal, non-migrant citizens plant and harvest the food that grows there. And it's all done by machine, anyway. The use of abundant amounts of illegal cheap farm labor for certain kinds of farm crops retards technological development in those areas of agriculture.
In addition, importing an ever-growing, heavilty criminal, uneducated, unassimilable, resentful, dependent, peasant underclass from a politically corrupt third world country is a recipe for social, cultural, and political disaster in this country.
The shamnesty politicians wouldn't even promise to get rid of the illegal immigrant felon population! At least they were honest, which astonishes me.
ok,
but what do they have to do with my post that you replied to?
i’d like to see president bush do thing for the next 18 months that
will enhance the republican party’s chances of winning in 2008.
bush’s position on this issue of illegal aliens will not.
Need for aliens?
What, is it like a root canal?
No thanks.
“There is a huge supply of excellent workers eager to immigrate legally in Phillipines, South Korea, Veitnam, and China. And these people are willing to assimilate here, not take over our southwest. They are skilled agricultural workers and become good citizens of our country.”
Workers from the Philippines and South Korea are free to leave their countries and the U.S. can choose to admit them. Workers from China and Viet Nam are not free to leave their countries; the U.S. can choose to admit them as well. Communist countries require two visas, one to leave (very, very difficult to obtain) and one to enter the country to which the traveler is going.
If the door were open, we’d have plenty of Cubans looking for work in Florida; the door out of Cuba is not open.
Sutton is determined to keep the two law enforcement agents in jail. Bush and Sutton are co-conspirators of the drug trade. They are arresting cops and letting drug dealers go free.
How about the farmer or company that took the risk of planting food and running a farm operation? Or the stockholders who put faith in food producing companies? Or maybe even the taxpayer who subsides that Mexican to the tune of $15,000/year? No, none of them deserve credit.
Yes he is, isn’t he?!
What do the elites and their few, deluded supporters care? It's job security for them.
So far I don’t se a lot of difference.
No Jorge, evidently they don't. They're an embarrassment to FreeRepublic.
And these are the people reporting me to the moderators for disagreeing with them, suggesting I be banned from FreeRepublic. Incredible.
This POOR excuse of a leader is singlehandely ruining this country with rampant illegal immigration. Anyone who can support this traitor is beyond me. Where are the cries from congress to build the fence?
Hunker down folks because we are importing a culture far different from ours. The most disturbing difference is an acceptance/practice of crime as a way of life. All the sheeple will wake up one day when American Idol stops running and say, “What happened to our country”?
Good Lord, Mr. President GET OVER IT!
We don’t want them here, can’t you understand that? You’ve got record low poll numbers and a crap legacy in the making, and you harp on THIS?
‘bush’s position on this issue of illegal aliens will not’.
It has immensely hurt the Republican base - very nearly destroying it.
It was the final straw for McCain, and I hope it guarantees this as the last term for the ‘swimmer from Mass.’, too.
You got it, Lollo.
Incidentally, is your visa current?
Apparently in your world the ends justify the means.
Perhaps that's your cue, Jorge.
