RedState endorsed Jim Whitehead went down in flames in Georgia last night. His opponent, Dr. Paul Broun, will head to Washington. Whitehead was heavily backed by the establishment Republicans and Dr. Paul Broun, to put it mildly, is the Kossacks' worst nightmare - military pro-gun, fundamentalist evangelical, hard core states rights, and anti-budget. He said he'd carry a pocket Constitution with him and use the Bible to measure matters on which he'd vote.
Going into the runoff, Whitehead had such a strong lead, in historic Georgia terms, he had over an 88% chance of winning the runoff. The congressional district pitted heavily liberal and large Athens-Clarke County in the west (home of the University of Georgia) with Richmond and Columbia Counties in the east - the real population center of the district. Broun was from the Athens-Clarke area and Whitehead from the Richmond-Columbia area, an area he represented in the State Senate.
That Whitehead imploded is just another amazing spectacle in how Beltway Republicans have lost their ability to run campaigns. Here's what happened.

Whitehead is obviously a republican, what is Broun?
IMHO , an AMERICAN!
“....nothing to do with abortion, taxes, immigration, health care....”
BINGO!! What makes the immigration issue a really hot-button is that the defiance of Capitol Hill for the will of the American people simply screams bribery and corruption....
If you consider that anti-amnesty almost always equals pro-WOT, Bush may well have sold out his war support for Love of Vicente.
We badly need to get rid of the Bush RNC--it's not just anti-conservative, but anti-GOP.
Thing is, this was a non-partisan runoff. The rules differed here (as in many states) because it was a special election. So this runoff was the general election.
Paul Broun is in.
Ah, well, then I’m smiling! I should have read the fine print—I assumed this was in prep for a general election.
Outstanding! Knocking on doors makes a big difference.
I thought the Latina that lost was slightly less liberal than Richardson. Both were fairly leftist, but the Latina voted down that ridiculous bill to demand compulsory fixing of pets (sorry, Bob Barker, I love you, but this shouldn’t be mandated by law).
The Hispanic candidate, state Senator Jenny Oropeza, was a certified moonbat. She attacked Laura Richardson for opposing gay marriage, among other things.
That’s a surprise, I’d have thought it might’ve been the other way around. Still, it’s unlikely Richardson will be a much better vote than Millender-McDonald.
Folks need to understand that this is probably the most conservative congressional district in the whole country. There are districts that are more “Republican” but that doesn’t necessarily reflect the true nature of things. When the people in this district send someone to Washington, you can rest assured that they picked the most conservative candidate available in the end.
Is Broun a “paleo” or a patriot? Does he express a desire to crush Al Qaeda to the last America hating turban?
It’s a good sign that serious conservatives can beat the Establishment in competitive primaries. The details of this story should be widely publicized so it can encourage other serious conservatives who want to run.
Broun, who served in the Marine Reserves: I believe that patriotism runs very deep in Georgia. I believe our citizens understand the need for victory over our enemies and reject, as I do, the idea of retreat and defeat.
Welcome to Congress, Mr. Broun!

Well, the result was we got a better, more conservative candidate elected. The RNC has become disconnected from the base, witness the immigration debacle.
If you think there’s leadership there you must have bionic senses. The rest of us can’t find it.
Dr. Paul Broun, to put it mildly, is the Kossacks' worst nightmare - military pro-gun, fundamentalist evangelical, hard core states rights, and anti-budget.
What does that mean? I'm all in favor of a budget -- a modest budget. Noone is more fiscally conservative than I am, but I want a budget. Congress seems to have been running without a budget for 6-7 years now. And that includes a long time that Republicans (not conservatives, though) ran both houses of Congress.
I suspect this is just sloppy writing at RedState.
