The U.S. command said Wednesday the highest-ranking Iraqi in the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq has been arrested, adding that information from him indicates the group's foreign-based leadership wields considerable influence over the Iraqi chapter.

Khaled Abdul-Fattah Dawoud Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, also known as Abu Shahid, was captured in Mosul on July 4, said Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner, a military spokesman.

"Al-Mashhadani is believed to be the most senior Iraqi in the al-Qaida in Iraq network," Bergner said. He said al-Mashhadani was a close associate of Abu Ayub al-Masri, the Egyptian-born head of al-Qaida in Iraq.

You don’t get it. They have so many because they’re constantly replaced, thanks to the men and women on the ground and in the air. Think cells, but many beehives.

Guess he won’t be conducting any terrorist attacks in the U.S. Up yours, Al Zawahiri!

I wonder if all the recent loses by AQ will effect the up coming attack on Israel on the 23rd of this month. See the "Something Happening In Israel" thread.

I have been watching sporadically the Senate debate on C-SPAN. I wish someone on our side would make that point. They signed a joint resolution that was passed overwhelmingly that stated that AQ was in Iraq before we ever invaded it. These are some of the same folks who carried out 9/11 and multiple other attacks against us dating back to at least 1993 and they declared war against us in 1996 in writing. Since when do we walk away from fighting the enemy no matter where he is?

Khaled Abdul-Fattah Dawoud Mahmoud al-Mashhadani

Now there is a name with a catchy beat....

Ooooooooohhhhh,
Khaled ... Abdul
Fattah Dawoud ... Mahmoud
AllllMashha ... dani
He's the Abu ... Shahid

You could probably put together a fun song around a refrain like that.

The capture of this guy led to the death of the other guy, since this guy talked.

Also they said this guy had ties to the internet and thats how they found him. I wonder if he posted at DU.

I am sure that this one was not on the original "deck of cards" but I wonder where we stand. Does anyone have a tally of the original terrorists, i.e. the deck of cards, and what the score is? Might be a good time to review progress.

One al-Masri was reported dead but it wasn’t the same Iraq al-Masri. Al-Masri means “from Eqypt” so it is a common name.

“Here’s the media’s cop out phrase,
“al-Mashhadani was a leader of the militant Ansar al-Sunnah group before joining al-Qaida in Iraq 2 1/2 years ago”.

Huh? They were quoting the the brigadier general, who I assume got this from military intelligence. How is that a media cop-out phrase? Or is the general in cahoots with the media?

By implying Ansar al-Sunnah had no Al-Qaeda contacts in the broader sense.

They quoted information from the general. Were they just supposed to leave that out? Do you have a super secret source telling you that this group did have contact with Al-Qaeda?
