Nigerias top Muslim leader said that he meant no harm against Christians when he urged a Muslim group last week to counter Christian evangelism by spreading Islam.
Alhaji Saad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and spiritual leader of Nigerias 70 million Muslims, clarified to African journalists meeting in his palace last weekend that he was quoted out of context and that he never meant any violence against Christians, according to Nigeria-based Daily Champion newspaper Monday.
I am not a violent person. Islam is not a violent religion and we had no intention of calling for a jihad; not in the least, Abubakar asserted on Friday, according to Daily Champion.
Here in Sokoto, I have maintained a cordial relationship with Christians . We truly love Christians and do not hold anything against them, he maintained.
Early last week, during a meeting of Northern Traditional Rulers (emirs), the sultan raised concerns about growing Christian evangelism in the West African country and called for increase Muslim evangelism.
The rise of secularism and the increasing activities of western evangelical organizations have made it all the more urgent that the message of Islam shall be heard loud and clear and the Jamatu Nasil Islam (JNI) must play a leading role in this endeavor, the Nigerian Muslim leader had said.
Abubakar, in addition to holding the title of Sultan of Sokoto, is also the president general of the Muslim group JNI.
The Sultans comments were criticized by some as divisive and could potentially instigate extremists to attack Christians.
The statement is unfortunate, coming from somebody who is highly placed like the sultan, responded the secretary general of the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria, Elder Saidu Dogo. CAN is the umbrella group of Nigerias Christian organizations.
You see while the past and present governments have been trying to forge an inter-religious tolerance among us, this statement from the sultan is very unfortunate, Dogo said.
The Muslim leaders comment comes to a country with deep Christian-Muslim tension.
Several months ago, a Christian teacher was brutally killed and then set on fire by her Muslim students who falsely accused her of desecrating the Koran.
Moreover, two days after the teachers murder an evangelical church in the same town was burned.
Nigeria, the most populous African nation with 140 million people, is near evenly divided between Muslims in the North and Christians in the south. Despite the rapidly growing Nigerian church, Christians still face persecution in Nigeria by Muslim extremists.
Uh-huh.

And then the Christians burned down a couple mosques and set some imams on fire. Oh wait, no they didn't.
Hummm...appears for the "visiting professorship"-visa-to-Harvard paperwork has it a snag...
Muslims can no longer hide behind that lie because precious few Westerners believe they are peaceful. Perhaps, being muslims, they simply don't know what peace really is.
The Koran tells them to hunt down their enemies, to forcably convert them, to 'strike them at the neck', to behead them. The Koran is a book of threats, against its followers and against its enemies. The New Testament Bible tells us 'turn the other cheek', it tells us to pray for our enemies, to forgive our enemies, to help widows and orphans. It tells us to help the poor, and to bless those who curse us. Jesus said: "Come, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest". Ours is a Beneficent God, and true 'God of peace'. Our blessed Lord asks us to evangelize others, (teach them), not convert them through force or threats. Our Lord and Savior sacrificed His life that we may live, the greatest act of love there can be. What did Mohammed sacrifice? The lives of others, that he may live and expand his power base, (by the blood of others).
Islam is not peaceful, it is sanguinary and brutal. Islam does not foster love and peace, hence it is not a religion at all, it is a cult that has borrowed a few points of theology here and there from several other religions; and then, as the devil will, perverted and corrupted them to suit his evil designes.
They left out the rest of his sentence.
...they taste like chicken!
They did. Must be year 2006 that Nigerian Christians fought back and drove a whole muzzie village away from theirs. They chased them and killed those who were caught with absolute brutality. Burned muzzie villages, mosques, set fire some muzzie folks and wreaked havoc that scared the heck out of the muzzies...
Sure you do and I like a Rattlesnake bite also.
Kinda like that Twilight Zone episode where the seemingly alien benefactors carried around a book titled: “To Serve Man”. It turned out to be a cookbook.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
Yes, he likes Christians with fava beans and a light Chianti.
I think I got an email from him wanting to deposit $10 million in my bank account.
You ARE a violent person, Islam IS a violent religion, and nobody EVER "accidently" calls for a jihad.
Lol
He loves them to death.
Taqiyya alert!
