For a well-known and previously well-liked southern gentlemen and respected former U.S. senator, who is not yet officially in the race for the White House, Fred Thompson sure is drawing a lot of unfriendly fire from both sides of the political aisle. Clearly the man both sides see a need to derail is Fred Thompson, which must mean, he is seen as the man to beat in 08, at least in the minds of the other candidates.
An old friend once told me, when you stand with your head above the crowd, you had better be ready to catch all the rotten tomatoes. Freds not only a head above the crowd physically, but it seems idealistically too. And here come those tomatoes
Let me see if I can remember all the reasons why were not supposed to support Fred Thompson for president according to politicos across the political spectrum.

What pundits tend to forget is that more than 80 percent of Americans are neither right-wing nor left-wing. These extreme partisan positions are reserved for political pundits and the politicians they aim to promote, or assassinate, as the case may be.
But most Americans see both politicians and their paid pundits as useless wing-nuts, -

Fire away!
I see him being attacked by the middle right and middle along with the left. The far right isn’t attacking him except a few Duncan supporters here and there. It is mostly the Rudy Guiliani crowd.
Hunter and Paul supporters have been the modst active in attacking Thompson, until he started climbing in the polls against Rudy, then his supporters got in on the act.
The DNC war room is in overdrive, as is their lamestream press.
At this point, Thompson should wait for all of them to run out of ammo, then return a little shock and awe of his own.
Right now it’s more like a Presidential “dance” than a primary contest.
As I see it today it’s Fred Thompson and Rudy, Fred’s to win and Rudy’s to lose.
FRed will be at the FReedom Concert in ATL tonight...
And I’m going...
:)
Rudy has clearly been annointed by the national committee and the liberal press. Democrats want to face Rudy in the general election. They sure don’t want to face Fred...whether their nominee is the empty suit from Illinois or Hillary. Either way, they are in over their heads with Thompson and they know it.
Rudy out classes them too, of course. But he provides much less of a distinguishable alternative. He’s really aligned with liberal Democrats on everything except the WOT.
The press wants a race between liberal Rudy and socialist Hillary, because either way, they win.
But the voters are looking for a real clear choice and I think that includes both Republican and Democrat voters.
Look forward to your report after!
As a card carrying member of the "The Reagan Right", I wholeheartedly support Fred.
The man sure can attract good looking women...
Gotta like that about him!
Right there with ya!
I agree

At least some of the Mitt Romney crowd are openly antagonistic as well. Are they middle right or middle? I'm not sure.
Oh heck, I like Fred. He is probably the best candidate for the Republicans, once you factor in positions + electability. He strikes the happy medium, though he does not mirror all of my views, esp on size and intrusiveness of government.
There really isn’t much to not like about Fred.
It seems to me that voters, especially those who drafted Thompson, are not looking for just another hardcore partisan willing to pander to voters down party talking points, but instead a hardcore American leader with an unapologetic mind of his own.
I’m 47 and have yet to see a candidate that parrots all of my views. I’ve heard every promise under the sun and seen nearly every promise ever made broken.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m not looking for a mirror image of myself. I’m looking for a solid American leader who generally believes in the same fundamental American principles that I do, who is willing to represent me by holding firm to those values.
I don’t need to agree with every policy decision or position. I didn’t agree with Reagan 100%. I need to believe in the man, his backbone, his foundational beliefs and his reasons for wanting to lead this nation.
So far, I look at the field and have more confidence in Fred than any other. If Fred comes out as Fred and not some polished committee mouthpiece, my confidence in him will grow.
If he becomes just another partisan mouthpiece, it will be back to the drawing board.
I suspect many would agree...

Hes too old (64)
He has cancer
He lacks political experience, or, hes a Washington insider
Hes been both bachelor and family man, twice
Hes too conservative, or, not conservative enough
He likes pretty women, though not the same way Bill Clinton does
Hes too tough on abortion, but not tough enough for some
Hes a national security hawk, or, maybe a globalist dove
Hes a political nobody, or, a respected member of the Council on Foreign Relations
He was a Washington lobbyist, though by all accounts, an underpaid one
Hes just a TV prosecutor, or, a real prosecutor who often plays himself on TV
He was a Watergate Nixon insider, or, he was a leading Watergate prosecutor
Nixon thought he was a dunce, until the dunce forced Nixon to resign the Oval Office
He seems to imply that nobody knows the real Fred.
That may be the real question to be answered.
A typical comment from the typical Hunter supporter.
Fortunatley, only about 1% of conservatives agree with you or Hunter.
Reagan - Tear down that wall!
Hunter - Build that fence!
The author might have overstated the right-wing at 10%. If you add Hunter and Paul supporters together, you won’t get anywhere near 10%.... LOL

I personally like what I've seen from Fred so far, and if he gets the nomination, I'd likely vote for him.
But hey, don't let the facts stop you from being rude.
