VATICAN CITY Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday removed restrictions on celebrating the old Latin Mass, reviving a rite that was all but swept away by the liberalizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The decision, a victory for traditional, conservative Roman Catholics, came over the objections of liberal-minded Catholics and angered Jews because the Tridentine Mass contains a prayer for their conversion. ... In addition to Jewish concerns, bishops in France, and liberal-minded clergy and faithful elsewhere expressed concerns that allowing freer use of the Tridentine liturgy would imply a negation of Vatican II and create divisions in parishes since two different liturgies would be celebrated.

Actually what the Mormons do has a very positive side-effect. They've built up a fantastic geneological database which they've made available to everyone, all on their own dimes. If it makes them happy to baptize people's ancestors, then as far as I'm concerned that's a great quid pro quo.
Heatseeker: Regarding your question and SamuraiScot’s reply about what version is permitted, the Papal letter is actually quite specific. (Got this from a related thread.)
Proinde Missae Sacrificium, iuxta editionem typicam Missalis Romani a B. Ioanne XXIII anno 1962 promulgatam et numquam abrogatam, uti formam extraordinariam Liturgiae Ecclesiae, celebrare licet.
It is, therefore, permissible to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 and never abrogated, as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church.
LOL
Great word picture!
Re: your last sentence-wanna bet?
why?
At least you’re lucky he waited until the Mass was actually ended, instead of making it the Communion “hymn”!
Thanks for the info! SamuraiScot’s point about the missals and books is still a good one though, I think, if all the old ones have the pre-Johannine text.
You don’t need to really learn it, it’s the original romance language, as you become familiar with prayer translations, hymns, and also seeing it side-by-side with English, you start to really get a feel for the meaning because the word or roots are similar. Also, it is very easy to pronounce, with specific vowel sounds and a few rules for exceptions with the consonants, much less confusing than English! The thing is to get someone to explain the pronunciation, there was a lady here on FR who had a quick-and-easy chart a while back, and then you’re set and the meaning comes gradually, but faster than you would think for a “dead” (ha ha) language.
I am so thrilled to hear that, thanks for telling us about the response there and the visiting priests and their enthusiasm. Reassuring.
LOL! You are so right. Our “folk choir” is composed of a handful of 50-something, long-haired hippies. Not a youth among ‘em.
Keep practicing - it must be like getting ready for an Ironman - and we'll all be rooting from the shore for you when the time comes! Best wishes and prayers.
The Apostles Creed for one.
I am familiar with the parish you speak of, my cousin who is studying to become a religious attend your parish when he visits us.
I would love to drop in to attend one of these Masses. Please freep mail me with further information.
My most difficult part of becoming Catholic was Confession. I was a quivering bowl of jelly on my first one. It really was an eye opener for me. It really does help you to think twice about doing something wrong. I mean it is hard enought to admit my sins to a priest, can you imagine having to face God and admit them.
Thank you for that wonderful lesson. One of the problems today with the priest looking out to the people with the second elevation is the fact that the priest faces the people, wherein the original Mass had the priest facing away from the people. I wonder when the Latin Mass is again offered, which way will the priest face? Will they have to re-do the altar to accommodate the priest facing the other way?
Heck, I pray for that for myself, as well as my family, as a Jew. The world could stand quite a lot more faithful, Torah-loving Jews, and fewer JINOs.
I agree. It was part of the liberal nonsense that went on during the destructive sixtyish era.
That bit about “divisions in parished because two different liturgies would be celebrated” is certainly bunk. My parish already has an English Mass, a Spanish Mass, and a Youth Mass ( Rockabilly Rite with Percussion.)
Sr. Eurythmics was always on and on about “celebrate diversity.” Never noticed them worrying about divisiveness.
“Rood screen”? I didn’t even know what that WAS until I read “The Stripping of the Altars” by Aidan Duffy.
Every Catholic ought to read “The Stripping of the Altars,” available at amazon.com for under $10, so for godsake get it and read it. It filled me with painful sweet nostalgia for something I never had: but God has this thing about rising again...
catholictothemax.com will even sell you a Tiber River Swim Team T-shirt!
When I wear it around, 99 people will just glance over it because it looks like a faded A&F shirt -- the 100th person points and collapses in laughter . . . .
