Gore: Son's arrest is 'a private family matter'

Updated: July 5, 2007 08:08 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) -- Al Gore says he's dealing with his son's arrest in California "as a private family matter."

Al Gore the Third, who is 24, was arrested early yesterday. Sheriff's deputies say he was driving about 100 miles per hour on the San Diego Freeway. They arrested him on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs.

The former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee appeared on the "Today" show on NBC this morning. He says he's glad his son is safe and is "getting treatment." He also says he's thankful no one was hurt.

Al Gore the Third completed substance abuse counseling to settle pot possession charges in suburban Washington in 2003.

One thing is that this is between the young man and the state. He is of the age of majority and is on his own. The rest of the family might buy his lawyer, maybe even pay his fines.

The powerful Goreleones may indeed be able to successfully buy his way out of having to pay in any serious way for his crimes, but I'm not sure if they're going to be able to prevent him from eventually killing himself and/or someone else.

Clearly he's a drug addict, and a loser with serious personal issues.

The Earth is dying, due to evil Humans. The only sane thing to do is party hardy in the few, desperate days we have left before the oceans cook. Who can balme young Gore?

I guess when the Bush girls drank and it made headlines nationwide, that did not qualify as a "private family matter". Hypocrites.

That's funny. I said the same thing about Paris Hilton. When I was that age, I was caring for a husband, 2 kids and our own home. I certainly wasn't crying for "mom" to get me out of scrapes. I was mom, kissing the scrapes. In fairness, it does seem that men are settling down later these days, but sheesh!

Endangering lives is not a private matter.

What I chose to drive is a private matter.

That is a fact, Rightwhale. And beyond what family money can provide in paying his fines, his bail and for lawyers and rehabilitation; success or failure in the end, is entirely in the hands of this young man himself.

My prayer’s for whatever they are worth, are with young Gore.

Also, in fairness, GWB had drinking issues well into adulthood — though he did manage work a real job and care for a wife and kids.

We'll be especially careful about crossing the street if he shows up here in his Priapus, although he would only be typical. Eight grizzlies killed so far, and lost count of drive-by shootings, car insanities, various armed robberies, knifings, and no idea if anybody is ever sober or married.

The kid even looks like a cake-eating prick.

Yes, he DOES look just like his wooden father--only with dyed hair.

Many young people his age are already contributing far more than he ever will. Somebody exactly his age is patrolling a street in Baghdad right now.

If a conservative’s kid screws up, it’s FUEL AND FODDER for smearing.

When a liberal’s kid screws up...

I was impressed with his ability to get it to go that fast.

Guy probably wanted a sports car but wasn’t allowed to get one.

Like father like son...

Drugs are the reason our culture has collpsed. A death penalty for all narcotics and marijuana is how prior civilizations (India, China) have turned around their social disease of drug abuse.

APJ enters the thread with this comment at 53 about the WOD...

AxelPaulsenJr: Oh yep, that evil drug war, getting hopped up stone heads who are driving over 100 mph on the streets off the streets. Yup, that damn evil drug war......53

Zon enters the thread at 67, having noticed that APJ mentioned the WOD...

Zon: Speeding is illegal. So is driving while impaired. Has nothing to do with the substance used to impair the driver. Driving while impaired is illegal. You support a return to alcohol prohibition, right? You do want to be consistent, right? I mean, you don't want to be a hypocrite, right?67

AxelPaulsenJr: Alcohol is legal, pot and the opiates are not, get the laws changed then come back and try to turn this thread into a wod thread, other than that, go away.

Apparently your dad let you on the computer again. Your argument at 53 implied a cause and effect relationship between the WOD and speeding. I showed you the immaturity of your argument and in typical fashion your response was you avoiding answering to your hypocrisy. But hey, that's your problem, not mine. Deal with it. Or don't. Makes no difference to me.

Private family matter...tell that to Nicole Bush (Jeb’s daughter) and the Jenna and Barbara Bush.

MSM double standard strikes again...
