Gore: Son's arrest is 'a private family matter'

Updated: July 5, 2007 08:08 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) -- Al Gore says he's dealing with his son's arrest in California "as a private family matter."

Al Gore the Third, who is 24, was arrested early yesterday. Sheriff's deputies say he was driving about 100 miles per hour on the San Diego Freeway. They arrested him on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs.

The former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee appeared on the "Today" show on NBC this morning. He says he's glad his son is safe and is "getting treatment." He also says he's thankful no one was hurt.

Al Gore the Third completed substance abuse counseling to settle pot possession charges in suburban Washington in 2003.

I’d love to see Paris Hilton style coverage of this!

I’m just amazed that he was able to get to 100 MPH in a stinking Prius

I'm just amazed how many people out have no clue how good a car the Prius really is. If it cost less than $20,000, there would be 5 times as many on the road as there presently are, and I would be driving one instead of a Corolla. I did get to drive a loaner Prius in 2003 and was very surprise how quick it got up to 90 mph. I sure 110 or 120 would not be impossible, depending on how the engine/motor is set up. Right now, the Prius and it's price is what hurts the payback on economy and makes it more of a statement for the environment.

Too bad that this wasn’t a long, drawn out car chase, with wall to wall coverage on Fox “News.” A California speciality!

If Jenna or Barbara Bush were arrested on the same charges, you can be damned sure it wouldn’t be a “private matter” to the press.

I personally think that all children of all politicians are off limits until they make themselves public figures.

If only Rush could have had some privacy...
You think if it were GW’s daughters they would have privacy?

How about if it were Mary Cheney?
We all know the answer.
The party of freedom and privacy couldn’t wait to out her.
And Liz Edwards was the first to stick her nose in... you know... the one who wants everyone to leave Silky alone?

I have no problem with the arrest at all. Its just that its suddenly a “private matter”. And I’m sure the whole “he needs treatment, not jail” mantra is coming next. Anybody else’s kid, they’s say toss his ass in jail.

Lil' Al's arrest is a public record.

Enemy combatant detentions are kept secret.

You are right. The story was not mentioned in our morning daily.

Rush Limbaugh’s problem was not a private family matter. Too bad that Rush’s dad wasn’t albore. albore would have protected Rush.

Had he killed someone high and speeding, would it still be a private family matter?

That’s the problem, the last four times he was snagged (not counting how many times he was caught doing drugs at schools and had to be moved, not because of the school, but other parents weren’t having the double standard. Like father, like son), it was a private family matter.

Seems like covering up and saying it’s private is not helping his son... Al should wake up before his son kills himself and someone else. He’s not a Kennedy.

No Al, you prick. Your kid barreling down the road at 100 mph while high on drugs is very much a public matter.

They should have arrested him on suspicion of being a dumb ass.

Driving a car?? At 100 mph??? That sure takes alot of gas to do that.

OOh, but they are Gores. They are royalty. They can burn as much gas as they want. We peasants are the ones who should not burn gas.

Nothing to see here...move along.
