I lived in Michigan when the television news channels played the videos of Dr. Jack Kevorkian assisting his terminally ill patients nonstop, day in and day out.
It was clear, as the parties involved spilled out their hearts and souls in the most dynamic of intense emotions, that the good doctor was responding sincerely, thoughtfully, professionally and with deep compassion to those seeking to end their agony.
You will find no man who more than I is dedicated to the self-evident truth that human life is sacred.
I value, respect and completely cherish the precious gift of life that God has bestowed upon each of us.
However, quality of life is pivotal to autonomy, individuality and independence.
If ever there were a part of life that government should never tread upon, it is decisions we each make about our quality of life and the choices we we make about extending or ending it.
The exhaustive shopping list of checks and balances, the thorough scrutiny that the patients, families and Dr. Kevorkian went through during those instances where he assisted in terminating their suffering, could by no stretch of the imagination constitute an indicator of a "slippery slope" toward convenient suicide.
Allegations to the contrary are in overt defiance of the facts and are pure hogwash. That a bureaucrat or another person would meddle in such personal choice is unforgivable and surely un-American.

Yeah well I don’t see him stopping abortion or murder of innocents so I guess if someone decides their burden is too much that’s their choice.
I think that Nugent is denouncing the government for involving itself. He states that even if what you say is true, the decision does not belong to the government.
While I’m not advocating suicide, I can’t imagine what those patients were going through both physically and mentally. If I were in that state, I’d certainly have throughts.
Is it God that decides for some POS to kidnap, torture, rape and kill another human being? Is it God that motivates a Islamic zealot to hijack a plane and end the lives of 3000 people? Is it God that orders a nation to secretly launch the bombing of a sleeping city? God may not want me to take my own life, but if I do, its none of YOUR business.
It’s an issue best left to state and local governments.
I live near Ted’s place in Michigan (rode my bike past there yesterday).
Ted’s basic creed in life is “I wanna do what I wanna do, when I wanna do it.” This explains his multiple child support payments, and his corresponding financial difficulties. Therefore, it comes as no surprise when he says that he wants to end his life on his terms.
This also means I got a ring-side seat to the Dr. K circus.
As we all know, every medical procedure has standards and rules. Even if we concede that doctors can perform euthanasia (and I don’t concede the point except as a point of discussion), there would indeed be rules, and review committees, etc. Dr. K was advocating that there should be no rules, and Ted likes that attitude.
If Ted went to the hospital with a self-inflicted arrow wound, he’d be outraged (trust me, the stories of his rage are true) if the docs didn’t follow the rules of good medicine. It baffles me why he thinks that doctor-assisted suicide wouldn’t have rules as well, primarily to prevent (in his case) an angry wife from collecting on his life insurance early.
I know a lot of conservatives idolize this guy, but he’s way, way off base here.
If God tells me that, I will obey. I don’t think he will need to send you to carry the message.

You assume it will be your choice. Nine times outta ten, it will be the decision of your loved ones. At that point, do you really want there to be zero rules?
To which I’d say, if you don’t want Big Brother getting involved in your choice to end your life, don’t invite him in. Ask neither for forgiveness nor permission, and certainly not for help. Just go ahead and get ‘er done.

From a legal point of view that begs the questions of who can decide we don’t have that right and what power should government have to punish those who act otherwise...
Let’s just pass a law outlawing suicide. Problem ended.

Yeah, right. At least one of the people he killed had no physical illness at all.
I believe Kevorkian has the soul of a serial killer.
