Court allows student's anti-Bush T-shirt

Putting its recent ruling on student speech into practice, the Supreme Court on Friday rejected a school district's appeal of a ruling that it violated a student's rights by censoring his anti-Bush T-shirt.

A seventh-grader from Vermont was suspended for wearing a shirt that bore images of cocaine and a martini glass — but also had messages calling President Bush a lying drunk driver who abused cocaine and marijuana, and the "chicken-hawk-in-chief" who was engaged in a "world domination tour."

After his suspension, Zachary Guiles returned to school with duct tape covering the offending images.

Williamstown Middle School Principal Kathleen Morris-Kortz said the images violated the school dress code, which prohibits clothing that promotes the use of drugs or alcohol.

An appeals court said the school had no right to censor any part of the shirt.

On Monday, the court said schools could regulate student expression if it advocated illegal drug use. Justice Samuel Alito cautioned that schools could not censor political speech.

I remember, way back there in high school(1966) when a young lady showed up one day wearing a pant suit. She told to drive all the way home, change into a dress, and then return to school.

Wow. Things have changed.

I wonder where this seventh grader got the idea that it was OK to wear a t-shirt that insults the POTUS during war time? But then, it’s Vermont, and we all know that Vermont is now Soviet Socialist Republic, isn’t it?

With any luck his classmates will give him an attitude adjustment. Free speech does have its consequences...

Maybe I should sue that teacher who always made me tuck in my shirt. 1987.

“Wow. Things have changed.”

You said it, Rex.

Most likely the kid doesn't have a fear of any of the other students taking offense.

Where and when I went to school there would have been a very real chance the kid would find his skull knocked from atop his spinal column with several baseball bats ~ and that'd be in homeroom at 7:30 AM.

Lord only knows what would have happened after that.

Times change.

I wonder if this student’s views were his very own- or did he listen to some adult, to be told exactly what his views were to be?

calling President Bush a lying drunk driver who abused cocaine and marijuana.....

This guy could have been a FReeper back before the 2000 election. I could swear that this guys name was Jim....not Zachary Guiles.

I have to believe his gene pool is a collection of fomenting
hate from parents that are very proud of his expressive anti-social behavior. He’ll probably grow up to be a college professor...

No doubt its parent driven BDS, but I’m 100% okay with this ruling.

Now, where did that kid with the ‘Straight and Proud’ T Shirt go?

See what I mean?

If the shirt bore a legend stating Bush was a faggot he’d have gotten 20 years.

Heck, if it had been even slightly PRO Bush , he would have been expelled .

Were I a parent there, I'll bet my kids would've marched off to school - without any input from me - with PRO-BUSH shirts.

In fact, where the He*l ARE the kids who would do this??/ )sorry, forgot - it's Vermont)

"Justice Samuel Alito cautioned that schools could not censor political speech."

But schools can have a uniform code. Would'nt a uniform code be the same as censoring political speech.

I disagree with your views. Minors should not be allowed all the rights of adults. If they did, it would be wrong to force them to attend school in the first place. If we accept that minors are not yet ready to exercise all the rights and privildges of adults, from voting to driving, drinking, etc. it is nuts to allow kids to make such public statements that are designed to incite reactions from others and disrupt the classroom.
