Over the past months of this nightmare of immigration scofflawry, listening to the rhetoric from the aristocratic Republican elites--Ive been carried back to the Magnolia Melodramas I enjoyed reading as a teenager. Gwen Bristows Plantation Trilogy; Frank Yerbys The Foxes of Harrow and the magnificent mother of them all--Margaret Mitchells Gone With The Wind.
George Bush once said, Im not a southerner, Im a southwesterner. He was trying to distance himself from the south and the taint of racism, a compassionate insult to every southerner who voted for him. But he has every resemblence to the linen-suited julep-drinking Massa of the Old South.
And the dynamic of the Elites verses Middle-class Conservatives is exactly like the plantation owner and his nearest inelegant neighbors...White Trash. Scots-Irish subsistence farmers couldnt afford to the leisured fineries of the Planter Class because they were trying to eke out an existence in competition with the institution of slavery.
Remember the characters of the Slatterys and the Macintoshes, Gerald and Scarlett OHaras WT neighbors? Not only did the OHaras hold them in contempt for being so hardscrabble, tacky and rough-textured, but the slaves themselves of the plantations held themselves in higher esteem than po whites.
And the Massa with the Big Heart dearly loved his servants, loved condescending to them--What treasures! Just like members of the family! Not that he set them free, or ate at the same table. There are limits to paternalism and noblesse oblige. But Massa and Missus were unfailingly thankful that Mammy and Pork picked up Scottys poop off the Big House lawn.
The irony--its the Southern middle class that makes up a lot of the soldiers who trusted him enough to serve in Iraq.
George Bush thinks he can afford to openly display the contempt he has always felt for Joe Redneck...er...Sixpack. His chief overseer, Tony Snow, let us in on the secret in the wee hours after election day. He can now concentrate on indulging his oozing childhood sentimentality by handing his house servants a deed to America.
Im reminded of another scene from Gone With The Wind--Scarlett was being lectured by an elderly matriarch about Trash. And when youre done with them--kick them away and do it thoroughly, because Trash clinging to your coattails can ruin you.
I have entered into many discussions about illegal immigration with a comment--housework and yardwork are political. This is a class issue between overlord elites who cant conceive of a life spent actually cleaning up after themselves. They break the laws, then have to justify the transgression by accusing the law of being bad. Thats why they become insulting and defensive when requested to obey the law.
Im done with Bush. I dont trust him--or any member of his Indolent family.
Had he pursued SS reform with the vigor of immigration reform we might have a viable SS..
Instead WHORE-HEY decides its best to destroy SS with 193 million illegals.
Well, I do know they think we want to breed with all the illegal aliens he can bring into this country. they will then have a permanent underclass to ignorant to know the difference.
Yeah, I hate how they portray law abiding citizena as evil monsters just because we want out laws enforced.
For those talking about bumper stickers, I was thinking of getting an anti Bush one, BUT, thought better of it. An anti Bush sticker might encourage people to vote democratic, inadvertantly. I think its better to get an anti illegal alien or anti amnesty sticker instead since that attacks both the dems and the weak republicans.
They have some here.

Here’s a ‘Down with Republicrats’ bumper sticker.
I’m not sure how it would work. We’d never get enough repulicrats to sign it. Actually, I’m not sure I’d trust such an endeavor in their hands, based on what we know about them. I wonder if it would have to be submitted to the Supreme Court since it would have to be citizens starting the impeachment process.
One of Bush’s orders as governor of TX was to remove a CSA memorial plaque to Texas’s fallen in the WBTS from a Texas state court building.
He is no Southerner...no doubt. He’s a self righteous good works politically correct about anything ethnic sort born of Yankee patrician blood who thinks himself above it all despite his downhome accent.
Were it not for his judicial appointments, Afghanistan, lower taxes and stem cell vetoes.....I would be absolutely livid.
Instead, I’m just angry and disappointed.
No more W stickers on my vehicles or thank you photos that used to adorn my walls.
He likes to dictate how things should be, he might be useful in Iraq, helping them set up their new government.
1) Who isn't?
2) Who does anymore? (Teddy?)
Actually I think it's easier to find PC Texans who wish not to be called Southern....like George Bush did...than to find Southerners who don't claim Texas.
Texas had 92,000 out of 100-110,000 eligible fight in the WBTS. That is plenty Southern enough for me.
You really don’t undestand this at all do you?
not trying to fight.....
but Bush has a history of denying Texas’s place in the old South and the War Between the States.
He’s a yankee ...of course he wishes to deny it.
I have not looked but I own some flattering books on his family. I bet I can find where they profitted either from slavery or reconstruction or likely...both.
the fact that Bush denies Texas is part of the South is telling to.....we Southerners
seen this thread
God bless you.
My uncle in Dallas, cousins in Austin, cousins in Gilmer and Kilgore and Pritchett, goddaughter in Beaumont....feel the same as you Texan and Southern...to the core.
They don't call it Northern Methodist University now do they?
it’s understandable that the policy here is to give sanctuary on Bush prayer threads and Bush Day in the Life of threads.
I was banned for a year over this stuff but even I can concede that to the Bush loyalists and the management’s decision here to make those threads off limits to ad hominum attacks on Bush or ganging up on said Bush loyalists.
Ganging up, baiting, trapping and posse roving used to be big sport around here...it’s not pretty no matter who does it.
Ouch!.. thats got to hurt.. a Mint Julep thrown in the face..
yep...another Texan with a Bonnie Blue Flag who doesn’t think he’s Southern...lol
I salute you....methinks many of these I ain’t Southern Texans on this thread haven’t been there long or they have been too sensitized about Dixie=bad
Hey Guy! I never said I wasn’t Southern. I’m Southern to the bone. I said Texas was Southern culturally and Politically. I should have added historically as well.
BTW, had Bush the Yankee had stayed in Midland for H.S. instead of going off to a Tony N.E. Prep School, he would have attended Robert E. Lee High School (along with Laura and General Tommy Franks) where they proudly wave the CBF.
In fact, the school had to agree not to display the CFB in order to march in Bush’s Inaugral Parade.
Texas culture is different from the type of Southern culture you find it places like Alabama, etc. It more closely resembles Kansas, than Alabama.
Why does Bush care more about pleasing Ted Kennedy than anyone who voted for him?
I’m white trash............with a gun. ;o)
I grew up in east Texas but spent alot of my teen to adult years around Dallas. My wife is from San Angelo and her parents live in the hill country. I always thought east Texans might consider themselves more Southern than other Texans.
