The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office. Even before this week's blockbuster series in The Post, discontent in Republican ranks was rising.
As the reputed architect of the war in Iraq, Cheney is viewed as toxic, and as the administration's leading proponent of an attack on Iran, he is seen as dangerous. As long as he remains vice president, according to this thinking, he has the potential to drag down every member of the party -- including the presidential nominee -- in next year's elections.
Removing a sitting vice president is not easy, but this may be the moment. I remember Barry Goldwater sitting in my parents' living room in 1973, in the last days of Watergate, debating whether to lead a group of senior Republicans to the White House to tell President Nixon he had to go.
(snip)
Today, another group of party elders, led by Sen. John Warner of Virginia, could well do the same. They could act out of concern for our country's plummeting reputation throughout the world, particularly in the Middle East.
For such a plan to work, however, they would need a ready replacement. Until recently, there hasn't been an acceptable alternative to Cheney -- nor has there been a persuasive argument to convince President Bush to make a change. Now there is.
(snip)
That leaves Fred Thompson. Everybody loves Fred.
(snip)
He could be just the partner to bring out Bush's better nature -- or at least be a sensible voice of reason. I could easily imagine him telling the president, "For God's sake, do not push that button!" -- a command I have a hard time hearing Cheney give.

The writer fantasizes a world in the Republicans are so stupid as to dump the sitting Vice President because the liberal moonbats believe he is the dark lord of the underworld.
Then the Republicans take their most promising presidential candidate, Fred Thompson, and make him Vice President, thereby tying the unpopular Bush around his neck like an albatross.
As I say, good for some laughs.
I’ve reached the point where I would almost welcome the impeachment of President Bush. Perhaps shamnesty would not be such a high priority if he is fighting impeachment.
Were gonna oust that lame duck after 7 yrs and 9 months! Yeah! That will learn em!
What pisses me off about this kind of thing is that its pointless and it cost copious amounts of taxpayer money to persue and generally results in the country feeling a malaise.
Sally Quinn is a vindictive fool.
Dick Cheney has served this country well for over 30 years. whats the point of attacking him in the final stage of his career? The VP hold no real power persay. He set no policy decisions as VP.
If Cheney could come up with a bionic heart, he would be my number one choice for president.
I'm mad at Bush for his weakness on border security, and for his many other efforts to find common-cause with the Democrats. I'm not mad at him for taking the fight to the enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm sure Iran prays every day to the great stone that Cheney will slip and fall in the shower before he gets around to them.
On that score, Iran and Bin Ladin and Reid and Pelosi and Sally Quinn are in complete agreement.
Quinn is whistling past the graveyard. Cheney running for president would be her worst nightmare, and I would give a lot to make it so.
Next best will be a Hunter/Thompson presidency. I can't wait.
Dick Cheney would be a much better president than Bush.
Cheney is rock steady, and one of the most brilliant
men in Washington. He’s a national treasure.
Of course, the moonbats want to impeach both Bush AND
Cheney. That would make Nancy Pelosi president (God
forbid).
The only upside to that scenario would be the resulting
cat fight between Pelosi and Hillary for the oval office.
add some spittle and a strap on and this could well be Chris Matthews yappin. Two true fools in a pod.
I bet Sally’s strap on is bigger than Chris’ strap on
anyway.
You have the same mind as Dennis Kucinich. True, he's a flake...but many FR posters are becoming just as flaky.
“Sally, Put down the crack pipe and step back from the reporters journel...”
And isn't she the one who was all mad because Pres. Bush's White House wasn't engaging as active in social life in DC as Clinton's?
Sheesh. Flakes all around us tonite.

Gosh I wish I had spent 500K (or whatever the tution is) for a degree at Columbia so I could make shit up for money
I think Cheney has served his country well. I wouldn’t go duck hunting with the guy though !!!
Then I could afford “spellcheck”
Duncan Hunter for President!
It’s been the DUmmie fear fantasy for ages that first Cheney would either resing or otherwise be removed and then President Bush will step down to avoid impeachment and whoever replaced them would have incombant status, and blah, blah, blah BFEE strikes again. So now a DUmmie who works for the Post is trying to get the ball rolling, I guess.
The only thing stopping the Democrats from impeaching Bush is that Cheney would become President. They're trying to convince the Republicans to oust Cheney for them, and then they will go after Bush. Even if Bush nominates a replacement, the Democrat-controlled Senate could hold up the confirmation long enough to oust Bush and install Nancy Pelosi as President.
How's that for moonbat theorizing?
-PJ
wishful thinking and attempt to give advice that will hurt Republicans
“Next best will be a Hunter/Thompson presidency.”
What a spectacular ticket! Talk about fear and loathing on the campaign trail!
The Moonbats might vote for it if they don’t realize the Scion of the Woody Creek Tavern is dead!
... yawn ... The big question is immigration... the little question is why are the liberals so clueless about what Republicans think yet so bold in declaring what we think.
