Cameron Diaz Apologizes for Maoist Bag
Jun 24 09:52 PM US/Eastern
LIMA, Peru (AP) - Cameron Diaz apologized Sunday for wearing a bag with a political slogan that evoked painful memories in Peru.
The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated "Shrek" films visited the Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru's Andes on Friday wearing an olive green bag emblazoned with a red star and the words "Serve the People" printed in Chinese, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong's most famous political slogan.
The bags are marketed as fashion accessories in some world capitals, but in Peru the slogan evokes memories of the Maoist Shining Path insurgency that fought the government in the 1980s and early 1990s in a bloody conflict that left nearly 70,000 people dead.
"I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it," Diaz said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.
On Friday, one prominent Peruvian human rights activist said Diaz should have been a little more aware of local sensitivities when picking her accessories.
In Sunday's statement, the star of "There's Something About Mary" said the purpose of her visit was to participate in a television show that celebrates Peru's culture. The actress has been in Peru as part of "4 REAL," a Canadian TV production that focuses on young community leaders around the world.
"I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history and wish for their continued healing," she said.

Typical of a Hollywood useful idiot...
Capitalism works.
Maoist bag? Where did Jane Fonda enter into this?
Che was common murderer and criminal.
Stupid clear through.
Yeah, she offered a faux apology, but the fundamental fact of Diaz and other leftists is that they somehow think it’s cool and chic to wear communist garb from Mao and Che. They demonstrate their complete ignorance that these people are mass murderers and that they murdered REAL people!
I bet when she wore the bag, she had a feeling that she’s part of something bigger than she was: a revolution, a global concern for little people, one of ‘them’...
Why are we worried about foreign supplies of oil?
We should be worried about the supply of peroxide!
At the rate these blondes are breeding, we will have to import peroxide from god-knows-where! Our dependency of foreign peroxide must STOP!
MY GOD ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME???
Does she, or any of her ilk, realize the “potentially hurtful nature” of SOCIALISM/COMMUNISUM?
Stupid is as stupid does.
How do you get to be her age in Hollywood never seeing that symbol? Red star over olive drab? No bells?
I’m going to take her at her word, but ouch.
It’s really easy to be a Communist when you live in America and make tens of millions of dollars.
This Cuban is hardly representative of the exile community at large.
Yes, when she bought the bag. But I will give her the benefit of the doubt that this incident may have slightly opened her mind that the official Hollywood view of the world may have some gaps, or even gasp, errors.
As I will, she apologized. The worst for her is to come; the ass chewings she will have to endure for apologizing from the Hollywood left. She will be off limits.
I guess that honor would fall to Mel Martinez, wouldn't it?
