IT WAS billed as the shipwreck find of the century with £250m of treasure recovered from a sunken 17th-century vessel lost off Land’s End.

Mike Williams, senior lecturer in underwater cultural heritage law at Wolverhampton University, said the situation was making the British authorities uncomfortable. “There is the potential here for a serious diplomatic incident,” he said.

Just threaten to blow up something in Spain - that’ll shut ‘em up.

It is a guarantee that South American tribes will claim it all.

Then some European court that feigns jurisdiction over “the world” will give it to them.

I believe long established maritime salvage law covers this and all other salvage operations in international waters. Finders keepers losers weepers. The finders’ tax collectors and investment partners will get most of it anyway.

Shouldn’t stolen property if found be returned to the original owners? This is surely property that was originally taken from the inhabitants of Central and South America. Now two greedy former colonial powers are going to fight over it?

Too bad Spain; ‘finders keepers-loosers weepers’. Besides, wasn’t that loot lost by the former occupiers of Spain- the ones that still control the government of Spain?

The whole point of salvage law is to prevent these squabbles over ‘original’ and ‘rightful’ owners. “Finders Keepers” is short and sweet, if you can get it out of the drink it’s yours.

Since you live in Florida I know you'll be sorry to to know that I'm giving it back to the Indians, from which the Spanish stole it from.

Just pointing out that silver was extracted from mines, and that the mixed Amerindian population that worked in such places was paid, not much, but they were paid for their very hard work.

Therefore, the silver of the coins wasn’t stolen, but was produced and paid.

BTW, we have a numerous community of Amerindians here in Spain, among others, a third of Ecuador’s population, so don’t worry we’ll share the treasure with them.
