Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

> You are bigoted against Satanists.

I don’t mind Satanists at all, so long as they behave themselves and pay their taxes just like everybody else. No bigotry there, mate.

You on the other hand seem to have a problem with people who do not believe the same way as you do. It seems to go way beyond disagreeing with them: you actually don’t seem to like them.

That’s sad.

Jesus said what Jesus said. Take it up with Him...

If you really want to know what Jesus says the parables are an excellent read:

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world" (Matthew 13:34-36).

Hidden treasure.......... Matthew 13:44
Householder.............. Matthew 13:52
Leaven................... Matthew 13:33
Mustard seed............. Matthew 13:31-32
Net of fish.............. Matthew 13:47-50
Pearl of great price..... Matthew 13:45-46
Tares in field (part 1).. Matthew 13:24-30
Tares in field (part 2).. Matthew 13:36-43
The Sower (part 1)....... Matthew 13:3-9
The Sower (part 2)....... Matthew13:18-23

“If Mormons would stop claiming to be Christians no one would have to correct them.”

Please, stop repeating this lie. If you are a conservative, its not smart to alienate allies; If you are from the other side, then crawl back under your rock!

The whole Bible is an excellent read. And Jesus said what he said. Like I said, take it up with The Boss: I didn’t write the rules, I just follow ‘em.

Pipe, did L.Ron try to rewrite the Bible, to write himself into the Old Testament?... I’m not that familiar with Scientology.

Find me someone that thinks Isaiah or Daniel was the devil.

You can believe that Mormonism, Lutheranism, Catholicism or any other ism is a cult. That does not make it so. My observation is that they are with us in greater numbers than almost any other ism you wish to name against the truly dangerous cult of Marxism.

Mormonism produces lots of babies and green jello. Lutheranism produces lots of lefse and lutefisk. Catholicism produces great fish fries during Lent. None of them kill people as does Marxism.

Accordingly, I prefer to focus my negative energies in fighting the real threat to our survival, not on one of the few brands of Christianity which hasn't allowed themselves yet to be hijacked by the truly dangerous cult of Marxism and the State Church of Godlessness.

Those examples you gave are conditional and in some cases they were fulfilled. The civil war happened and there was mayhem. The United States army was defeated by the Mormons — see the Utah War or Buchanan’s blunder etc.

David W. Patten to go on a mission.

Verily, thus saith the Lord: It is wisdom in my servant David W. Patten, that he settle up all his business as soon as he possibly can, and make a disposition of his merchandise, that he may perform a mission unto me next spring, in company with others, even twelve including himself, to testify of my name and bear glad tidings unto the world. (Doctrine & Covenants 114:1)

This prophecy was made on April 17, 1838. David W. Patten died in October of 1838 and thus never went on a mission the following spring.

He didn't go on the mission. He died. This is a false prophecy. Nothing conditional about it. The "Lord" said he was to sell all his merchandise and go on a mission in the spring.

Another false prophesy commonly pointed to: The United States Government was to be overthrown in a few years.

I prophecy in the name of the Lord God of Israel, unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted, and there will not be so much as a potsherd left for their wickedness in permitting the murder of men, women and children, and the wholesale plunder and extermination of thousands of her citizens to go unpunished (History of the Church, Vol. 5, page 394).

Joseph Smith made this prophecy in May 6, 1843. However, the United States Government did not redress any of the wrongs committed against the Mormons in Missouri, and now over 150 years later, the U.S. Government still stands.

You say that almost 20 years later there was a civil war in the US. But the prophecy was the U.S. government would be "utterly overthrown" and that not so much as a "potsherd" would be left. Plenty of Civil War era pots still being sold at antique stores today, in the USA, a country not "utterly overthrown." False prophecy.

If Mormons profess to be Christian, then they are Christian. If you as a Christian don’t like that, then take it up with The Boss:

Luke 9:49-50
“49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.”

2 Corinthians 11:

13
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

> 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Amen. Best to leave it to Him to sort out, ay. Jesus knows His own: our job as Christians is to get on with doing what he told us to do and nevermind the next guy. As we are exhorted in John 21:

“20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.”

Sage advice. Straight from The Boss. We should follow it, and leave it to Him to sort out His own.

2 John 1:
10If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

The Boss speaks again, and tells you to attend to your own knitting:

Matthew 7:

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

To me, these seem to be very clear orders. I do not think you are well advised to exceed them. Stick to your own knitting and leave God to sort out the wheat from the chaff.

Joseph Smith was a false prophet depends entirely upon your own presuppositions.

Especially if those presuppositions are based upon Scripture - the Old and the New Testaments.
