Gardasil has booth in WalMart

Hubby went to WalMart in Pennsylvania today. At the main entrance is a Gardasil booth handing out pamphlets. There was a line of parents so Hubby started a rant. He asked the woman why not just teach your daughters to keep their knickers on? Her answer was because they won't. Hubby responded that our daughter is in her 20's and still a virgin. She responded that daughters lie. He offered to let our "female tiger" talk to her.

At that point the woman asked if he was on his cellphone. He said "Yes" And how about this not being tested on 9 to 11 yr olds, your target group" She responded that it's been tested on 12 year olds. He said "You have no idea what the longterm affects of this drug are on reproduction"

At that point she didn't want to spar anymore and said "It's safe". But by then Hubby had already planted doubts and the parents in line had heard it all. I LOVE Hubby.

Anyone else need to visit a WalMart today?

While your at ejecting people, can you get rid of those pesky Girl Scouts, blood banks, bake sale people, and other organizations that are in your face with trying to sell stuff. /sarc. I understand that I definitely don’t like it but I don’t get all uptight that I try to kick people out of personally owned stores. Plus are you not a capitalist? I say just ignore them and in a few weeks they will be gone. Please let’s not ruin it for other organizations. Kick one out, they all go...I have seen that before.

I am sure the ones who died did not consider themselves negligible.

Forgot to tell you, the link in 120 says they stand to make $4billion. How many suits would lie to rake in that kind of money for their company? A lot.

Cigarette companies did it for years. I guess I don’t understand your point.

Read the whole thread. And WHY is WalMart pushing a drug for an STD virus? Post 160 might be of interest.

Emotion. It hits the target..........except in this case. This is about money for them. Their drug may NOT be effective nor does it work for everyone. (that’s from Mercks site). Less than 1% of the population will EVER need it but golly! let’s play “what if”.

Tobacco companies weren't telling women they'll die if they don't get the vaccine.

Btw, Girl Scouts, Salvation Army and others are no longer allowed INSIDE WalMart now. But the maker of an STD vaccine is.

Just Damn...I was kidding. I can’t believe that Walmart has done this. I guess they really want to lose customers fast.

It’s been a couple of years since they were allowed inside around here. It’s one of the reasons Hubby was being hissy.

I understand why your husband had a fit. I think if our FRiends knew that bit of information, they would not be so quick to attack in my opinion.

It poses no health threat to males.

HPV is a term for MANY DIFFERENT types of a virus that infect the skin.

In spite of what some folks say here, it does not just get spread by sex, in fact, its spread by contact. And 80% or more of people walking the earth have been or are infected with some strain of HPV or another in their lifetime.

In most cases the infection clears on its own, and causes no issues.

However some strands, in some women when it comes in contact can infect a womans mucous membranes/cevix etc and in some of these women develop genital warts and in some cervical cancer.

While warts are a risk for men, cancer is not.

There is however more recent studies that link HPV with throat cancer as well in both sexes.

The scientific aspects of this vaccine are simply, how safe and effective is it on younger women? Given it hasn’t been tested on younger girls, this is a legitimate concern. I don’t think the state should be mandating untested products on children.

The larger issue though in terms of the debate is not the scientific issues as much as the moral ones. Those that advocate abstinence will argue its giving the go ahead for sex... even encouraging it. Something I find a bit of a stretch... especially in light of the recent findings on throat cancer.

Generally this is a vaccine that in terms of symptoms will prevent genital warts in women and men... in women genital warts can lead to cervical cancer. However HPV is not purely an STD.. the danger of cancer certainly is from when it infects the mucus membranes of a female, and it appears now the throat of both sexes.

I don’t agree with mandated innoculations for 9 year olds, but I also don’t view this vaccine as some assault on morality. HPV is a very common infection, and likelihood is very high that your son and daughter will be infected by some form of HPV in their life time.. even if they are absolutely morally beyond reproach. And as for the “no sex without marriage”... there is still the everything but intercourse that many have used.. HPV is a skin infection, it doesn’t require a penis in there to infect a woman.. an the throat link would help protect as well.. though I don’t think this vaccine has been approved/tested for this (throat cancer) threat yet.

I would not force this vaccine on my young daughter, but I would not tell my older daughter, if you get this vaccine you are immorral.

In spite of what some folks say here, it does not just get spread by sex, in fact, its spread by contact.

According to the CDC and every other site I've visited, it is spread through contact with the genitals (i.e. genital to genital or mouth to genital). Nothing I've read indicates there is any danger of it being spread casually.

I don’t think the state should be mandating untested products on children.

I agree. The state has no business mandating vaccines where the disease cannot be spread through casual contact.

I don’t agree with mandated innoculations for 9 year olds, but I also don’t view this vaccine as some assault on morality.

The 'assault on morality' comes from the pharmaceutical company being less than ethical in its efforts to maximize profits.

HPV is a very common infection, and likelihood is very high that your son and daughter will be infected by some form of HPV in their life time.. even if they are absolutely morally beyond reproach.

Please explain how it is passed in a way that someone who has behaved morally beyond reproach could contract it. Nothing I've ever read indicates that is possible.

The vaccine has very high effectiveness in women who have not been infected already. It has the capacity to save thousands of lives a year. It can save thousands more a lot of emotional turmoil and financial expense going through cancer treatment. I don’t see the reason for your hostility.

Marrying someone who has not been "morally beyond reproach".

HPV is a virus that infects the SKIN, it is spread by CONTACT.. not sex. 80%+ of all humans on the planet are or have been infected with some form of HPV.

The danger as I have said is that when the virus comes in contact with the mucous membranes.. certain strains of the virus will cause genital warts in both male and female when they infect these membranes. If infected in women this can lead to cervical cancer.

There is also studies suggesting infection of HPV in the throat can lead to throat cancer.

HPV is not simply spread through sex. It is a skinned based infection, and is incredibly common and usually goes away on its own. The danger is when certain strands in certain women are exposed to it in their genitalia. This exposure need NOT be from a penis or a mouth.

This is a vaccine that affects less than 1% of the female population. The hype is extreme. And you said : The vaccine has very high effectiveness in women who have not been infected already. Not according to Merck themselves. From the first page of Mercks Gardasil page.

From Merck

Cervical abnormalities that can sometimes lead to cervical cancer

GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer

Well that narrows down the field of those it MAY help. Certainly not all of the less than 1%. This is a madeup crisis. It's being pushed as a necessity for all women when less than 1% MIGHT benefit. And Merck lobbied to give an untested drug to prepubescent girls. I'm not gullible.
