3rd Annual TexasCowboy Memorial Shoot
TheMom | TheMom

Posted on 06/20/2007 5:36:02 PM PDT by TheMom

Hi Everyone! I know this is really early, but I thought this would give everyone a chance to make plans & start saving pennies for the trip.

The 2008 shoot will be held May 3rd, at Schwenkes Gun Range (4407 FM 1069) in Aransas Pass, Texas (35 miles SE of Corpus Christi. The cost will be $15.00 per person.

Schwenkes is a private gun range, that charges its members $50.00/year. I met with Mr. Schwenkes today, he said since “I seem like a nice lady”, he would allow us to use his range. He also said if I would give him the time we will be there, he would close the range to his members. He smiled as he said the following, “This range is for members only, some may complain, but I own the darn thing and can make up the rules as I go along.”. I am thinking 10:00 – 2:00. Let me know if you think it should be longer or shorter.

There are only two rules set in stone; 1) pick up your brass and deposit it in a tub at the end of the shooting area, and 2) when shooting at the rifle range aim at the mounds, there are cows in the area and he doesn’t want them dead! The maximum target distance on the rifle range is 200 yards.

For our Memorial Shoot attendees that do not shoot, there are lots of tourists stuff for you to do so you want be bored at the range. The U.S.S. Lexington tour is awesome, Padre Island (Port Aransas) is always fun to cruise and Rockport is right around the corner.

Food & fun will follow at Deer Camp South after the shoot.

The trailer at DCS will sleep about 8ish people, if anyone wants to sleep there. If you are a camping type person, you can pitch a tent in the yard or if you have a camper, you can park it in the yard. For those that like luxury lodging, there are several hotels in Aransas Pass and the surrounding area (Rockport, Port Aransas and Ingleside) and Corpus Christi is 35 miles away. To get to Port Aransas you will have to ride the ferry ~ a whopping 5 minute trip (the wait in line may be a bit longer). MAJOR BIT OF ADVICE - - Choose a major hotel/motel chain when you pick your lodging!

The closer it gets to the date of the shoot, the more I will go into details.

That would be the golf course where I used to live on the Southwest side of Houston. We’ve seen up to four of them together on the side of the fairways. Water hazardous on the Quail Valley Country Club are heavy on the hazard.

Brazos Bend State Park
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/brazos_bend/

Hike and Bike/Foot Trials: Hike and bike trails are located around 40-Acre, Elm and Hale Lakes and interconnect. Alligator viewing is best from the 40-Acre and Elm Lake Trail system. Foot trials take you off the beaten path into the hardwood forest. Always take plenty of water with you for you and your pets. As with all state parks, Pets are allowed on leash only and leash can be no longer than six feet. Do not allow pets to drink from or enter the water. Know your Alligator Etiquette found on park maps and posted throughout the park. An Outdoor Guidebook will assist you in learning about the parks different ecosystems and outdoor safety. The guidebook is available on the volunteer web site or for sale only at the Nature Center Gift Shop.

Not to far from the shoot.

Click the map for the others.

Cow = Tastes good & no fun to ride.

Probably not fun, but doable. Sometimes cows, or oxen, make better draft animals than even big horses such as Clydesdales or Belgians

Horse = Don’t eat but fun to ride.

The French eat then, as do many others. A restaurant in my home town, with one in the town where my wife was born as well, got cited during WW-II for serving horse, and not telling folks about it. Nobody knew the difference, but then again they served a sandwich that was sort of like a Sloppy Joe, but with much more bun than meat paste. I used to eat them as a kid, but the last time I had one, when I was in college, almost 40 years ago, they were disgusting. The restaurants are still in business though, and my sister in law, the grandmother of the great nieces who live with us, loves the things.

Yep ~ I can picture him now, as cradles that Barrett .50!

No BATFE up there (they go the other way I believe). Up there its a 20 mm semi-auto. Or a Ma Duece. (Ammo is cheap too. :) ).

I’d never lose faith in the “modern day Amos Moses” You still have all your limbs left after your exposure to them in Savannah!

You're not suppose to *literally* give it a piece of your mind!
