Actually, assume is the proper word, and you shouldn't presume to tell me what I mean to say. You feel compelled to once again, display that lack of mental sharpness?

Just to set the record straight, I do not now, nor have I ever belonged to a labor union, or any other such group.

And from the Webster dictionary online:

Assume

5 : to take as granted or true : SUPPOSE: I assume he'll be there
