Search continues for man that jumped into ship channel
One person is feared drowned in the Port of Brownsvilles ship channel after police there rounded up nine undocumented immigrants hiding in a wooded area on the ports south side.
The men and women believed to be from Mexico and El Salvador attempted to flee port police and at least one was seen jumping into the channel.
Port of Brownsville Police Chief George Gavito said that shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, officers spotted a man hiding in some brush. He was quietly arrested by port police on suspicion of illegally crossing the nearby border.
Later on during the day our police officers spotted another bunch of them in the same area, Gavito said.
One of the nine men and two women found during the sweep fled from officials.
We saw him go into the water, Gavito said. Then he got in an area where we couldnt see him any longer.
Police dont know toward which direction the man swam. We dont know if he went up the channel or down the channel, Gavito said.
Tugboats going by at the time (reported) they did not see him cross or try to cross the channel. So we think he might have come back out.
U.S. Coast Guard assistance was requested. The agency deployed a helicopter out of its Corpus Christi station and a boat from the South Padre Island Small Boats Station to search the channel.
Coast Guard Lt. Charles Hawkins said they searched the area for more than four hours. No one had been found at press time Monday.
The Brownsville Fire Departments scuba dive team assisted in the search.
They were going to be there for two to three hours, Fire Chief Lenny Perez said Monday afternoon. They thought they found something, but they werent sure. They are still looking.
Meanwhile, three men from Mexico, two from Honduras, two from El Salvador and two women from Guatemala are being held at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office in Brownsville.
Oscar Saldaña, spokesman for the CBPs Rio Grande Valley Sector said Mondays arrests would be treated on a case-by-case basis and did not give a timeline of when the men and women might be released or face an immigration judge.
Its common for undocumented immigrants to walk toward the port after crossing the southern edge of the border, Gavito said.
Once in a while they will come in between where the immigration check point is (Highway 4) and they kind of follow the light thats at the port on top, he said. Sometimes they come in too far and they come in to the port area.
Gavito believes the group captured Monday jumped the ports security fence but, they were never in a restricted area, he said. They never created any kind of threat.
He added that any intrusion on port property is not taken lightly.
Move along... move along. ...
Sounds like they must have lost their documents.
But Graham and Kyl continue to say these laws are unenforceable.

"...arrests would be treated on a case-by-case basis and did not give a timeline of when the men and women might be released or face an immigration judge."
Nope, no mention of deporation.
De nada.
No mention in the article the illegal aliens will be deported.
Our tax money being used for what it was appropriated for?
Whatever next?
The roundup and deportation of the other 25,000,000 illegal aliens?
But, but ,but .... I heard Geraldo (AKA Jerry Rivers) say in his immigration “debate” with Michelle Malkin that undocumented workers commit crimes at a lower rate than do American citizens. (immigration crimes, identity theft, falsifying Government documents, etc obviously don’t count as “crimes” for his “undocumented Americans”)
No mention of illegal alien either, only “undocumented immigrants”.
Do we really need more reasons to call our representatives in Washington, D.C.?
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!
