Tom Leppert claimed victory in the Dallas mayor runoff Saturday night as opponent Ed Oakley conceded shortly before 10 p.m.
Mr. Leppert rocketed to a strong early lead, capturing about 58 percent of early voting ballots, according to unofficial Dallas County election results.
In telling his supporters that the election was over, Mr. Oakley said he had spoken with Mr. Leppert and told him he ran a good race and would be a good leader.
Describing his own campaign as being the "underdog," Mr. Oakley said, " I can't tell you what it has been like to win races in districts you weren't supposed to win."
Earlier in the evening, Mr. Leppert was all smiles at his party at Gilleys on South Lamar, where about 150 supporters, mostly dressed in business casual, were taking in the good news.
Mr. Leppert said, "With numbers like that, 60 to 40, I got to tell you, we ought to feel awfully good."
Mr. Leppert and Mr. Oakley were seeking to replace incumbent Mayor Laura Miller.
Last month, Mr. Leppert and Mr. Oakley emerged as the leading vote-getters in the mayoral general election, setting up a final month of campaigning for a runoff election to be decided Saturday. Polls had shown the race too close to call. The mayoral campaign has been the most expensive in Dallas history, with more than $5 million spent among all candidates.
Mr. Leppert, a retired business executive who pulled in 27 percent of the vote last month, led his opponent in fundraising and in campaign expenditures. Mr. Oakley, a City Council member, had 20 percent of the vote.

That is the last Republican to ever win a mayoral election in Dallas Texas, if the immigration bill as presently drafted is signed into law.
Good news as Leppert was definitely the best candidate of the two. Just about all I’ve seen or heard from the local Dallas media over the last few weeks has been that the race is “neck and neck”, “too close to call”, or “tied”.
58 - 42 ain’t that close.
Good news in Dallas *ping*
The Dallas Morning News (liberal rag) released a poll several days ago showing Leppert leading by just a 47%-45% margin.
The Dallas City Counsel has a history of bozo antics and inept members. For example, there is a ministry in Dallas (BigHeart) that for many years helps feed the homeless and find jobs for them too. Recently the City of Dallas has been harassing Big Heart placing all sorts of restrictions on them. It’s a disgrace and shame on the City Counsel of Dallas. Hopefully the new mayor can have a positive effect on all of this idiocy.
That's a flat out landslide.
I have relatives who are 30-year Dallas residents (North Dallas) and every couple of years we travel there to stay for a few weeks' visit. My relatives get the Dallas Morning News delivered, and so I check it out every morning when we're there. I was always positive the Philadelphia Inquirer had to be the most shameless, pathetic, liberal Democrat publication in the country until I read the Dallas Morning News. That thing is jaw-dropping.
Wasn’t the Morning News in Dallas conservative at one time? I may be wrong.
Except that Leppert is the kind of Republican who believes in "man-made global warming".
Not that he'll be able to do anything about it as mayor of Dallas. But it gives some insight as to his intellectual make-up.
Sadly, so are Newt Gingrich and Mark Sanford.
Maybe, but not in at least the last 25 years.
And thereby avoids having to hear people quoting Gunny Foley’s speech from “Officer and a Gentleman” for the next four years.
You're right. The Times Herald was the liberal paper.
Don’t forget panderer to illegals.
Somebody here explained to me that Sanford’s ploy (a “global warming” commission) was simply an effort to cut the rats off at the knees. I wouldn’t be so sure Sanford is stupid enough to fall for the “global warming” scam. Nor Gingrich, for that matter.
I just wish Republican politicians would stand up and expose the scam for what it is rather than make a game out of it. It’s as if they have conceded that the general public has been successfully conned, game-set-match, and they are now simply fighting the rats for the rights to the bogus issue.

If you think that is bad, you should see the next door neighbor paper the Fort Worth Star Telegram. It is pathetic.
They offer them for free at the grocery store, and I inform that they are not fit to line my bird cage with....(I have no bird)
Re: "Wasnt the Morning News in Dallas conservative at one time? I may be wrong."
Yes. If I'm not mistaken, the DMN was once affectionately called something along the line of "Conservative Bible of the Southwest."
For the record, I'm a 7-day/wk DMN subscriber... I get my dose of news there and supplement with the internet... of course :-)
The worst of it is the way in which they hide the comics. There are so many Kohls adds, JC Penney Ads etc. The only thing that still abounds are the lingere ads!!!
Today on Turner Classic Movie they showed "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini!" Given todays fashions that movie was very "strait laced" in comparison.
Congratulations to Dallas and to Texas!
It seems that whenever I read about Texas here at FR, it’s about something good happening there, which really makes me want to visit. :-)
